Radio Shack lost me as a customer. When they start charging products on line to purchase by credit cards. I look the other way. I will never buy anything for them ever again. The good days are gone.

Radio Shack in my town stocks them even tho they don't stock alot of them in my town.

Radio Shack

I purchased a GRE500 in april of this year and had trouble with "garbled" reception of our local Project 25 trucked systems. GRE offered several suggestions with little or no help. My final solution was to purchase a Pro106 model and program it the same as the GRE. It was night and day reception with the RS coming out on top. My point is when I went to my local RS store there were 2 employees there. The first said they did not have one in stock. I went to my car and thought I should go back and ask if another local store had one. The second employee said they had one left. I then asked if either had any knowledge of the scanners I was looking for. The second employee said "they do not train us on those items". I shook my head went home and using the same cable from the GRE purchase attached the scanner. I then programed the RS scanner with the same info. I found the RS scanner out performed the GRE.

Moral of the story...You better have knowledge on what you are purchasing because so many store sales people are not fully knowledgeable.......................

As a RS employee, I do not know everything about the 40 different cell phones, 10 different E-Readers, 20 different home phones, 10 different routers, .... but I do know where to look information about them. Oh, I do know everything about the scanners we carry.

Thats rare. I'm surprised you still work there. From what I have read and seen it is kinda taboo to even act like you know about anything other than cell phones.

It's not 1975 any more, and RS staff are not electronics and radio buffs. as they once might have been.
Salespeople are apt to know more about the latest trendy digital devices like tablets and iPods, then about scanners. This should come as a surprise to absolutely no one.

So, what are you saying? That scanners haven't changed at all since the 1970's? Today's scanner are just as sophisticated and trendy as any other electronic item RS has on it's shelves. With the price people pay for the newest scanners it would be very feasible for the employees to at least take the time to learn a little about the products that are on the shelves. It is called customer service and you should have some answers about the products you sell.

In the way we think the world should be you're probably correct, But marketing strategies and tech in the 21st century just aren't that warm and cuddly.
The number of people like you and me that would really go out and plunk down $400+ for a top of the line digital scanner in a years time are maybe 7-10,000 people a year, versus let's say 400-500,000 people per year who would rather buy a piece of crap iphone! Now what do you think Best Buy, or rat shack or Circuit city is going to teach their little munchkins to sell???
Somehow, I don't think digital scanners are on the list of "know how".

A few years ago when I used to work Security in a local mall. I was in RadioShack one night and a customer had a question about a scanner they were looking at.. IHMO that this RadioShack usually only carries conventional and trunking analog scanners no digital. The customer asked what the frequency range of the particular model and the employee had this dumbfounded look on his face, so I walked over and turned the scanner around and point out that the ranges were printed on the back of the scanner.

radio smack and their sales associates

I have the same in experience radio smack sales associates in the philadelphia/ southern new jersey region. 1st the scanner and radio communication end, most of the people employed by radio smack have no clue to scanners. In fact i had 1 manager tell me when someone is looking for a scanner i will call u to come over and sell the scanner, Wrong, that what they get that spiff / sales commission for. 2nd to the batteries that support the scanners. the power disappears from them very quickley. They need to upgrade the units with more power.

Upgrade what with more power?? Most handheld scanners have settings you can adjust which will make a big difference on how long they will last on a charge.
Batteries require a certain discipline and understanding when you charge them! If you don't apply that understanding then they will not last.

Yep, its another "BASH the SHACK" thread from scanner users that have no clue what goes on in the head of the 18 to 25 year old sales person they are talking to that thinks the works revolves around, are clueless about what really goes on in the world around them because they never watch the news, can not repair a lamp, and only care about the next over hyped up electronic gadget (Phone, Tables, Computer, Game system).

Yes, I know scanners, keep one on in the store all the time and still, on many days, customers, young and old ignore the scanner and ask about that next over hyped up electronic gadget.

OK, I will get off my soap box.

Andrew Black at the NE Mall Radio Shack in Hurst, TX is very knowledgeable. Needed to order a few parts for my Pro-106, painless process thanks to Andrew.
