I have been monitoring the WRAL business frequencies for several decades. I have noticed something like “intermod” around 7pm. Basically the frequency will play on air audio. Now, WRAL hasn’t been analog for decades (nor a reliable news source, either). I have noticed a significant amount of traffic on WRAL and WTVD, which is good. Just wondering if I am crazy.

That's difficult to respond to since you don't mention frequencies you are hearing it on or the type of intermod you are hearing.

I don't know the exact frequency since I have gotten spoiled with alphanumeric scanners. I just started noticing it in the past week or two. At first I thought it was someone accidentally keying their mic.

if you hearing over the air audio it could be the ifb ear pieces . is it a constant stream . does it happen during the newscast time blocks . most stations use a cell phone to dial into the control room to feed the audio to them . but some do use the uhf 450 mhz rp freqs .

I'm fairly confident what you're hearing is a remote broadcast via equipment such as "Marti". Radio/TV Stations use these system for remote broadcast at various sites. These types of systems have been in place since the 70s, possibly earlier. here's a photo of a Marti transmitter that broadcasts on 450.3875mhz.
