Why did Raleigh FD switch over to automated dispatching as well? I can't stand listening to that. I dont understand the purpose in that. Does the FD do any traffic over the old dispach 154.370 anymore?

It is called Locution Cadvoice
and Raleigh is now doing what Wake County has done for over a year...it is a quick easy way to dispatch an event over multiple talkgroups meanwhile sending the event to alphapagers...you get used to it after a while...

I so agree, I HATE it. I've traveled all over the us and never heard any other agency use this! I'm a former firefighter & am glad it's "former" I'd die if I had to listen to this mess all day, how annoying!I'm betting though that all agencies will soon go to this as well, one day there won't be any need for real telecommunicators anymore, boy I sure miss the good ole days!

Houston, TX also uses an automated dispatch system, however, I'm not sure if the same system as Raleigh.

I would hate to know i was using that kind of system and had to hear it all day. I would hate to have to rely on a computer to dispatch. I wouldn't feel comfortable If i needed help and if I knew a robot is going to dispatch. whats the next thing? automated 911...press 1 if your unconscious press 2 if you are choking...lol? etc..What if it something goes wrong with the computer..i dont get how that can be dependable

guys lets face facts the tlele communicators will never be replaced by computer for call taking but i do see how it is good to have the automated dispatch so the telecommunicator can stay on the line with the call taker

Auto Dispatch

Plano Texas started the Robot dispatching the first of the year.I've read all the good things that the PR spokesmen say about the systems, but machines break, and people then take over the dispatching and FIX the machines!Seems to be a waste of $$.

Love/hate affair for me. Being a communications addict, I love the technology, hate the way it sounds. Technology of automated dispatch - it's what's coming, so get used to it. I still don't like the way it sounds. I would imagine Locution is responsible for a large number of pagers NOT being in the "Monitor" position now.

The first time my daughter heard it, her only comment was, "Oh God, Stephen Hawking has a daughter." Any truth to the rumor that some of the not-so-bright are still trying to get a date with "her?"

Well while the system sucks, there is Auto CAD which is used by many departments around the country that chooses the companies for the dispatcher. Yes there is invovlement by the dispatcher to add or remove some compaines but it is still done by computer. Once a dispatcher chooses the incident type, compaines are added based on the systems presets. And sends it out. Here it is just doing the dispatch as well. the fear should be when the computer starts to handle updates and answers units in the field. I am sure as technology grows, the voice will become more human.

The down side i think it missing the extra ringing phons in the back ground or the many 911 ringing, or emotion in the dispatchers voice. At least you knwo it will always be consistent 24/7 and yo don't have to adjust to 8-10 different voices or dispatching styles.

About the Alpah paging, I odn't know about the dispatcher paging th alpha. If the system has it, the proper units or command staff are paged automatically by the system as it is dispatched or upgraded. For example, here in charlotte, when ever a call goes to a confirmed Pin-in or working fire, hazmat, multi alarms etc, command staff are paged the info with units by the system once the dispatcher updates it. The AutoCAD pages the essentials, Units, Address, Situation, Channel.

Saddly technology is the way to go, the hard thing is in some areas it changes SUPER FAST and in others not so fast. for some of the more seasoned members, it wasn't that long ago when punch cards were ding used and hell, go back north, and box alarms and pull boxes are STILL in service. I'm used to prox boxes and box numbers personally, but like others you have to adapt.

Raleigh fire on viper system/computer voice

I believe that the wake co. radio folks call the computer generated woman's voice LOCUTIA (sp), but I thought it had to do more with Capt. Picard captured by the Borg becoming briefly Locutus on Start Trek the Next Generation than anything else...(ha)

Marshall is right, that you do get used to it, IF you don't have more than one scanner going at a time and hear the out of synch phases of her voice on both digital system and the old convention frequencies at the same time...THAT is hard to listen to....rgds, redclay 1/30

This IMO is a major waste of taxpayer money. The way I understand it a telecommuncator still has to dispatch the call, just a computer announces it. Not only that, it sounds horrible. Glad I don't have to work with it.
