• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

RAV4 hybrid and APX 7500

I am looking to get a RAV4 hybrid for my next vehicle. My question is wondering if it is possible to install a dual-band APX 7500 in a RAV4 hybrid. It would be a remote mount version with an O7 head. Where should I mount the head, the body of the radio, and the speaker. Also, with these newer cars, is noise an issue that would affect reception? I would plan on bringing the car to a professional up-fitter and have them install NMO mounts for two antennas as well as install the radio. Looking to know if this would be practical with a RAV4.

I am not planning on getting a vehicle with a sunroof

Good.

A good installer should be able to figure this out. However, it's might be costly depending on how hard it is, and how low profile you want the install. We've got a few of those at work, but no radios installed in them.

Noise shouldn't be an issue if the radios are installed correctly. A good upfitter (as opposed to a 'stereo shop') will know how to do it. Usually the noise complaints you hear of are due to installation deficiencies created by those who install radios that prioritize cutting corners and making things easy.
Positive lead for the radio direct to the vehicle battery.
Negative lead for the radio direct to body ground.
Permanently installed antennas.
Proper cable routing.

Talk to the upfitter shop first and make sure they understand what you are asking for, and make sure they are competent. Look at their other installs. Not all install shops are equal, and whatever you do, do NOT go to a stereo/car alarm shop.

Be careful RFI can be bad in some EV/HEV models. Wonder if it's worth walking around the one you're interested in with an HT to hear what kind of noise is generated when the vehicle is running.
