Re: BCT 15X

Hi Guys, Re: BCT15X Scanner.

New to this scanner.
I have seen things being complicated, but this is really something else.
So far I have programmed by hand all interested me a commercial AIR Traffic frequencies
the once I do know using ARC XP pro software.
That part works well thanks to that software.
When comes to police scanning Toronto, Oakville and surrounding areas,
this scanner becomes completely ridicules and useless as a programming tool.
I have not seen anything like that and complicated as hell.
I do not know bands, frequencies being used and I guess correcly it is a lot of it.
I attempt to program this device for police band, have this device scan that band
find all frequencies and stored them for the further use.
That would be too easy to ask I guess, any way I did spend a number of hours, so much time wasted.
Guys, is there anybody that would give me a hand here and help me program this device
so while driving my vehicle I could listen to this interesting sometimes conversation
where the program is far better than on regular radio station.
Much appreciated for help. Marc.

I take it English is a second language for you as I have a hard time understanding what you are saying.

Police channels can be found in the database. Simply scanning the police band (I think that's what your doing) will not work in a metro area like Toronto. Police in Toronto, Peel, Halton, Hamilton, and York are all on trunked radio systems that need to be setup with a hot key/bank. I would suggest reading the manual in regards to trunked systems.

I would use the radio reference import utility for the simplicity alone. You will need to have a premium sub to Radio Reference.

I would second that. I recently made a trip to Toronto and had my 396XT set up for Toronto Police/City/Transportation in like ten minutes or so using import feature of my software. It will work the same way for your 15 for all the analog voice stuff. You just need the Premium Subscription like WZ1 says. I don't use it a lot as my scanners are all set up for my local area and things don't change much but just that one trip made me glad I keep the subscription up, worth every penny.

The reason I have gone on the forum and write this small thread was that I was
looking for the programming assistance.
I do not have to be a college graduate, knowing the trunk radio system or if my English
Is the second, third or 7th language to program and operate that scanner.
After all it is the radio, a scanner radio not a sophisticate programmable gadget.
If there is the way to do so I will take it, if there is non I will put it away
understanding that this device was build for the professionals such as you are.
I am sure there is a huge market out there that would have something similar to
what this scanner can do in a simplified way of programming.
To clarified what I have said in that hard to understand request, let’s say
I want to program for scanning the commercial air ( not the military air )
Scanner should have this option build for choosing this “ service “ or band for that matter.
I do not have to know the start and end of the frequencies of the band, modulation type, and frequencies step. Scanner should do that automatically.
This also should apply to the trunk system when choosing police band.
Purchasing this scanner I was looking for this type of programming
unfortunately not finding easy way – simple way of doing it.
I do travel a lot in US going between the states hoping to use it there.
I guess this have to be postponed for a while.
Anyway, thanks for replay.

It's called Service Search and available on your BCT15X already.

Trying my best not to quote you out of context here - but personally, I would conclude that most scanners I've worked with are very much-so "sophisticated gadgets"

I am sure there is a huge market out there that would have something similar to

One device in particular comes to mind - the Uniden HomePatrol. With this scanner, the consumer need not spend countless hours learning about trunked systems and individual talkgroups.

I agree; the HomePatrol is probably more appropriate for you.

"I do not have to be a college graduate, knowing the trunk radio system"
You don't need to be a college grad, but you do need to understand a little bit of trunked systems if you want to effectively use and program the radio. Most of these radios aren't simply appliances anymore. But a radio like the HomePatrol will attempt to program itself automatically as much as it can.

"this device was build for the professionals such as you are."
Most of us are not professionals, but simply hobbyists who are willing to spend time learning how to use the equipment. It does take effort. It's not as simple as it was 20 years ago.

Hey Guys, Much appriciate your help !

The more I dig into this, the more fascinating it gets.
So far I have found on YouTube the specific video demonstration on how to program
this BCT15X for “ Custom Search Motorola Trunk System “.
Not even that I program it, I am listening the Toronto police and peel police
scanning entire band 800MHz With no problem whatsoever while driving all over the place.
I must say, perhaps I did jump to early.
Now, looking at this thing from the other angle,
Well, The scanner definitely looks pretty good, if not excellent.
This also showed me a good way how to go around with some type of programming
Which after all it is not that complicated to do.
First step is behind me, next step to get acquainted how to use it while driving in US
going from state to state.

RE:Advice

Hello Guys I need your advice here.

From my previous posts you do know that I am new to this but since then I have made a lot of progress.
To be honest, I am not really interested in listening to all the police or fire departments
for example finding what Mrs Coleman dog is up to, or all about robbery in progress.
I travel a lot, the OPP and all highway patrols are in my biggest interest.
I also know that there is far better scanner available BCD996XT
which I can easily add or replaced for that matter.
From the forum I have learn that new encrypted system is being implemented
something that the scanners will not encode, but could be use with the laptop for decryption.
Well, that’s all fine for the home use perhaps, but while driving it gets awkward and complicated.
Seeing all those circumstances, is it worth it to invest in this lovely scanner for that particular use ?
If the radar detectors would be legally in use in our area, then I would not need the scanner.
Any input in this matter would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks Marc.

I'm here a lot
I think you are missing the point on why the rest of us love scanning.

Save your money for fighting your speeding tickets.

You cannot decode encryption with a laptop. It is possible to listen to Pro-Voice Digital and some other formats using a laptop, but not encrypted transmissions.

A scanner that is capable of monitoring a particular police force in your area is not much use as a replacement for a radar detector. It's not like they broadcast on a regular basis where they are setting up a speed trap. Even if you did hear, they might be there for 15 mins or half an hour and move to somewhere else. You may get limited use by hearing when they are setting up the aircraft speed patrol. Sometimes they stay in an area for a fair while but you won't always know exactly where they are located unless you hear all the conversations as they are getting set up. You will have better luck avoiding fines by just keeping your speed at a sensible level.

For OPP you could always enter the VR frequencies to determine when your near to a cruiser.. but for the safety of yourself and others why not just drive at a decent speed? Also you cannot take your scanner in to several US States in your car without facing misdemeanor charges and perhaps jail time.

Many Thanks for all your replay,

I am actually glad that I post this message here. ( Learning all the time.)
I did not realized, referring to the last replay, that having the scanner in the vehicle
would lead me to face misdemeanor charges. wwooooo
I definitely did not check and definitely must check on that.
I also did not mean driving like a maniac, but just be worn what’s ahead of me.
That was my original concept thinking that the scanner could be use for a lot of things.
I could probably listen to CB radio getting the information I need
but choose the scanner as far advanced and much interesting device.
Did I missed the point ?, perhaps I did missed the point what scanning is all about, but get this far
it is hard to turn back now.
I will take all your advises for which I thank you and do appreciate it, and... try to continue.
