There's dozens, if not hundreds, of USB-mini cables on Amazon & elsewhere. I like this cable because it has a ferrite core which helps mitigate interference from other devices if you are using the scanner, connected to your PC, to log activity.

This one is three feet, but there are others in lengths from ~ a foot to 15 feet.

With the scanner connected to your PC, click the drop-down Scanner menu in FreeSCAN.
Select Control Scanner from that menu.

From the Virtual Control sub-menu, select Com port setup.

On the next sub-menu. select Start Auto

Presuming that you successfully installed the serial port driver, as mentioned earlier in this thread, and you have the cable inserted, connecting the scanner to your PC, FreeSCAN will find the correct port for you to use for programming.

1. I DO NOT buy or sell on Amazon PERIOD. Why because Amazon has screwed me over many times.

The USB programming cable arrived in the snail mail today. Also I found the original 3' programming USB cable that came in the box with the scanner burred on the floor. The scanner is now responding. I was able to program the scanner for the 2 analog ham repeaters that I can reach with my Yeasu FT8900R and an indoor vhf/uhf J-Poll antenna with Scancat. I haven't figured out hpw to use FreeSCA yet.
