I know it's not my high speed cable connection, nor my computer or browser, because it only happens on RR.com. The home page and the top level Forum page usually feed just fine. But when I click on the "new message" icon in any thread, the response takes at least a full minute. On really bad days, my browser times out.

I have also noticed lately that the list of users browsing any forum I'm reading is at least 2 or 3. Multiply this by all of the active forums and it means that a lot of ports are open simultaneously. I'm thinking it's a load problem. I would also guess that the forums must be on a different server from the databases or else the whole site would operate at a crawl most of the time.

It looks to me as if the forums will be needing more horsepower soon.

I have dial-up and don't really notice anything slow here. Other websights I go to are slow compaired to here. But then again it might be just me, not racing through life. I don't want to get in a big hurry and miss something improtant

I'm seeing just over a second to access the new messages. The only exception to this was the Official 246T forum and with 33 pages it took 13 seconds to come up. I'm running 802.11b off a cable modem.

Dave: Just a thought, but a damaged cookie or file could be causing problems. I sometimes have slow loads, but never as long as you say. You might think about dumping your cookies and temporary I-net files, and seeing if it helps (although it is a pain to have to enter all the saved info on different websites)...anyways, just a thought.

If you're referring to the TCP port (80) that would have active sockets, keep in mind that the socket is only open when an actual HTTP request is serviced. The browser opens a socket, connects to the server, requests the page, receives the data, and both ends close the connection.

There won't be an excessive number of sockets open "simultaneously" unless all of the users are requesting pages at the same time. A user reading a page they've already received puts zero load on the server.

Thanks for all the helpful replies. Further experimentation seems to be in order.

I'm reluctant to toss my cookies  but ....

I'll agree with that, but maybe a little pruning could be in order. Just erase the RR ones. BTW, I too have experienced slow periods, even to the timeout point. It usually happens at the most inconvient time, like when replying to a post. :x

I have always blamed Lindsay.

I have the same problem from time to time. I've been blaming my ISP.

Lindsay, Is there any thing you can do to delete this post from this guest?

Nobody thinks this is funny or wants to read it. Maybe it is time not to allow posts from non members. One person can spoil it for many!

I deleted the message from the guest. Don't forget that there are several forum moderators on here in addition to Lindsay.

PHPbbs is famous for that - timing out when you submit your reply (not a complaint - I think PHPbbs is a pretty good effort). Just hit back and submit it again and it usually goes through the second time.

But the board is pretty sluggish. Maybe it needs a faster host. ;)

Joel, I know that "Guest" can post here in the help forum because if you ever get stuck and can't log on, this is where you come to get help. Used to be that you could post as a Guest in the Tavern, but I am not sure if that is still the case.
