I brought back my Bearcat 300 display with a capacitor, but I’m looking at a Realistic PRO-2020 with the same issue. I’ve searched the Internet, but have yet to find any reference to this. Is it usually the display itself, or a bad component?

The service manual is at REALISTIC PRO-2020 SERVICE MANUAL Pdf Download among other places. The page with the logic schematic shows the display circuit in the upper right corner.

First replace the capacitors marked in red (C6, C8, C9 and C10). Be sure to install the new parts with correct polarity, especially C10. If the display returns then check the voltages marked in green to confirm correct circuit operation.

If the display is still out then check Q6 and Q7. Replace if needed. Then check the diodes D8-D11 and replace the bad part if any have failed. The resistors and film capacitors are least likely to fail but those should be tested if the display is still out. If T1 is bad then the display can only be fixed with a parts donor radio.
