Each area is dependent on reception so your house could be 1 house closer or further from the tower and it works, where as his house could have enough of a multi signal to not work.
Are you familiar with the area in question? I am. I travel in the area where he lives all the time with my SDS100, when I had a 436 and a G5 pager. Trust me, that area is well saturated with RF signal from the CLMRN. It is on the outermost most edge of the Troop I simulcast area and well within the Troop G simulcast area. Now, if he is having some interference issues or no signal indoors, that is another issue that only he can solve.

It has not been suggested but there is another option, Uniden 996 P2. I actually recently sold mine and I live about 5-7 minutes from you ironically. It is a great scanner for what you are looking to do. I had no need for it since I have 2 SDS200s and an SDS100. It never gave me any problems with reception. I loaded the CLMRN into it and just locked out everything except Troop I. Just a suggestion

Thank you Manny. I've taken note of the Sheriff's Badge (currently a Judicial Marshal?)...an inspiration to posting my badge in lieu of a "P'

You can't beat a G4 or G5 for the state system. My G5 is fantastic.
I will agree only from a reception standpoint. The G5 only allows a limited amount of TGs. The 996 P2 and SDS series lets you download the entire CLMRN. That is why I got rid of mine and went with the SDS100.

I use my G5 as a public safety device, in conjunction with my duties in the fire service, as well as serving on an ESF-2 working group and an IMT.
I have My G5 set up to monitor a number of combinations, depending on what I need or want to monitor. Everything from just my town police to every Fire/Emergency Management TG in Region 4, as well as Zone/Knob positions for every other region in the state, along with positions by Troop , county, agency or role tasking. It really can handle quite a bit, but for my use, I'd never want to hear all of CLMRN.

Here is why I like the P25rx, and I promise I'll stop shilling for it...

My office is in my basement, I have a laptop upstairs running BTConfig w/ my P25rx connected via USB-C. I launch the app and I can just RDP to my laptop and listen while I am in my home office, or VPN in over my Firewalla when I am at the main office. You can also pair a bluetooth speaker if you want, but I like the display view in the windows app.

I love my P25rx, but it can be finicky at times. Some times it doesn't want to find any control channel, which is annoying. But when it works, it is the best tracker of CLMRN you can put your hands on.

Do you use the roaming features? I never really experimented with those... I am usually just stationary... but I agree, the unit is hands down the best I've used, and I've owned an SDS100, G4 & G5, which I've since gifted a relative. Again, never took the p25rx mobile, so I can't comment that, but its a really terrific receiver for sure!
