AM radio, on the other hand, is in a band just beside shortwave, and a thousand miles at night is nothing. Happens every night.

If you really want to brag, when I was first licensed, the only antenna I owned was an old Antenna Specialist MON scanner antenna. I was using some old Radio Shack RG 8 coax and was using my Yaesu FT 8900R - quad band radio on 2 meters. 146 MHz and talked to a guy down in Florida on a non linked repeater, my antenna to the repeaters antenna somewhere near Tampa Florida. Not bad for 50 watts, a 1/2 wave antenna and coax that lost almost half the signal / power in 100'....

I also worked a couple of school club round up station in Tenn and North Carolina with that antenna set up on simplex.
