Hello all,

I hope I'm posting in the right forum - there's a ton of them and I figured this would fit in general. If not, then apologies in advance and please, mods, move to the correct forum.

So I wanted to buy my mom a good AM radio. She had this 90s-styled boom box that weighed a ton but since we moved, we decided to get rid of it. The reason was because, as mentioned, it was just way too big, and also because the AM reception was so, so bad. I mean out of a scale of 1/10, the reception was literally a 2.

After having briefly searched online, I came up with the Sangean PR-D5. Then I read a review on Amazon about it and the reviewer said if I was an AM listener, that I should go with the Sangean WR-2. So I checked out the WR-2 and the first thing that popped in my mind was that not only did it look great, but it was small, too. Perfect!

My "problem", though, is this: my mom listens to the radio while walking all around the apartment (not a huge apartment - about 1000 sq ft) and I can assume that a desktop radio is meant more for office use and won't really cut it for home use? Or am I completely off on this? I've never owned a desktop radio, so I'm not really sure how loud they are. Even though we used that big, archaic machine for quite some time, it was loud and we felt and heard it throughout our entire home and so we've become use to that. Though I don't expect the same thing out of a table radio, I wonder if it is on the opposite end of the volume spectrum when compared to bigger radios. If so, then I'm open to other recommendations. I'd like to keep the budget at $150 and less, so anything you guys can recommend in that price range would be great.

Thanks

I don't know about that radio, but you might want to try these guys:
AM/FM Radios - C. Crane Company (800) 522-8863
They have been selling radios for a while and they specifically have some "good" AM radios.

I do know that, at least a while back, the GE brand "Super radio" was considered to be one of the better consumer AM receivers out there. I don't think they are produced anymore, but you may still be able to find them.

Thanks, mmckenna.

Just checked ccrane, and the WR-2 is actually listed at the very bottom - though it's much cheaper on Amazon. One of the reviews says, "Given the size of the radio I thought that it would lack good bass. Wrong! Bass is surprisingly full. Brightness of the display can be adjusted and is clear and easy to read. I would buy it again." While another reviews says, "I found the reception to be very poor.I tried to add a FM Reflect Antenna but it made very little difference." So not sure what to think, really.

Will look into the Super Radio. Should you (or anyone else) have any other recommendations, please let me know.

Yea', true. I checked Amazon and it did get a massive amount of positive feedback on there, though. Didn't actually read through every review, so I'm not sure if much of what was said had anything to do with AM reception-quality or not. I guess I'll probably just spend a few minutes going through each review to gauge the general consensus and see what I come up with.

Reviews tend to attract the extremes - either it's the greatest or it's the pits.

RCA acquired the GE division that produced this radio for many years. This model is now sold as the RCA RP7887 Superadio III. It was the same as the former GE model.
