My $5 rat shack iron just doesn't do it for me anymore. Been using a butane iron, but I'd like something more versatile and controllable. Need some recommendations for hobby level kit, preferably under $100 and ideally can get out of Amazon or similar. Looking at the Weller WES51 or Hakko FX888D or something but I'm open to anything.

Thoughts?

I've used a Weller WESD 51 variable solder station for the last 12 years or so, does a great job. Auto shut off after 40 min. I order most of my conical tips from Digikey.com I think you can still get the Weller stations from there too. :). 73, n9zas

I have a Weller WTCPT at work and one at home. They aren't adjustable for temperature but they heat up fast and the temp is consistent. Tips are interchangeable depending upon your work. I'd by another if needed.

hakko fp-101. Interchangeable tips, gets hot quick, 4 heat levels, cool quick also when you have to change tips. I did like the Radio Shack Butane iron because if you were away from outlets, they worked when all others failed,.Only thing badn was they seemed to wear out too fast. They burned up.
