The cross-band channels are something of what we are doing in our county. Only exception is that our smarter than the radio tech public safety department heads are using only one channel.

Basically this is a channel that crossbands all VHF-Hi, UHF, 700, and 800 where applicable users onto a channel that allows for inter-op communications. Real world usage of this - I am dubious as to one, two, or even half a dozen channels are capable of handling a real cross-agency emergency of any large scale. Small scale incidents - yes; an earthquake, or major conflagration, or flooding? Only time will tell.

Users of such a system are anticipated to include, public works, health, water departments, as well as the normal state and local versions of medical, fire, and law protection agencies.

Could you have possibly accidentally locked them out?

I checked the FCC database and there are no new freqs licensed for Petaluma.

Did they contract with redcom (maybe at the new fiscal year, July 1) for dispatch and now use the south county tac for response and their old chl for private tac?

I emailed a retired chief friend of mine and he hadn't heard of any changes with Petaluma, however he said he would ask around.

Let you know if he finds anything.

found this through Google
(The term “crossband” indicates that these devices most commonly are used to rebroadcast a transmission in a different frequency band; however, such devices can also rebroadcast within the same frequency band. The concept of operation is basically the same regardless of whether the rebroadcast frequency is within the same band or in a different band.)

Petaluma Red 154.025 will probably be retained as a Tac or administrative channel, but the city has contracted fire dispatching out to REDCOM on 154.31.

My Chief friend emailed me back again and said while talking more FD folks up there about Petaluma going to RedCom he was told that Rohnert Park was talking to Sonoma Co SO for Law enforcement contract and Ranch Adobe Fire AND RURAL METRO for fire service. For those who may not know, RURAL METRO is a private fire suppression Company and many believe their services are inferior to professional FFs because they have to pay lower wages and cut corners to make a profit. (Kinda like hiring a private security company for law enforcement).

However in Rohnert Parks case, they are a Public Safety Dept, which means the Police pretend to be FFs and are pretty bad at it. So RURAL METRO may be an improvement for Rohnert Park. (I lived there for 5 yrs and they burned down many structures).

Other PS Depts should not take offense to my Rohnert Park PS Dept remarks, I know Sunnyvale runs a very good dept.

So look for possible changes there in the future...

This is all old news. Resolved about a month ago. Rohnert Park cops/FFs took a big contract hit to remain locally run.

I didn't hear about Rural Metro up here, but I know they were bidding the San Carlos contract, which went to Redwood City.

Darn I thought I had some hot news, I guess that's what happens when you talk to OLD retired fire chiefs who talks to other OLD retired fire chiefs, and I'm no spring chicken myself, so all my friends are OLD retired guys....

When I was up there the way RP's DPS was run, seem very different from that of other DPS's as they tend to tie all communications too close to the PD comms. Often only the personal are assigned or dispatched to an incident. Last I heard they were still dispatching and working fires on the PD channel.

Our FD saw the issues with PD always saying "stand by" to the fire units, and moved it's operations to it's own channel. After much resistance from the dispatchers, our dispatches were moved to the FD channel only after a "Code 33" prevented the dispatchers from setting off a page for a house fire.

There is a lot to be said positively about having dedicated fire dispatchers. Even the cross trained ones seem a lot more efficient when they are dedicated just to the fire
units.

Retired911 - does RP require a year of serving in the fire house before going on the PD side? I know many DPS's have a requirement like that.

We have a few of our PD officers who were volunteer firefighters first. Kind of nice to have the PD pick up a hose and help you on the fireground.
