• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

This is a large and very visible forum. We cannot jeopardize the ability to provide the RadioReference services by allowing this activity to occur. Please respect this.

I think it's more of a matter of having them not installed or turned off than your power. I took mine down there and all I heard was a radio check on the Parkway.

Who heard yours, and how far were you getting out?

Could have used a CB on the trip to Pigeon Forge last week for road info. I had an old Cobra 25 laying around. Can the truckers hear you on a radio that hasn't been peaked and tuned? Maybe a new handheld on a 5 foot antenna just as good?

Knoxville, TN

1) That stretch of IH-40 is an enormously busy truck route from K’ville to the split for IH-81.

2). There are several good CB shops.

3). There are several outstanding base station operators.

4). There are plenty of regulars on AM-19 talking things up.

Tennessee is the land of Goshen for radio in the South. The Carolina’s are pretty good as well. Lots of Interstate traffic splitting towards other routes.

But the road to Pigeon Forge is not a big truck road,
per se. Not from TN, and not out of SC.

Backwoods locals may be on other than AM-19. A more modern radio with Scan capability would be preferable.

Line-of-Sight issues in & out of the National Park and similar terrain makes all radio more difficult.

Things must be slow on RR since the Batforce swooped down on my lowly CB thread. Maybe someone who has used a CB on an interstate highway in the last two weeks will comment.

I have a CB in both my Jeeps and my work truck. I travel every week for work. In my work truck it varies but mostly near home I listen to the log trucks. On 95 and points north if its dead stopped traffic I'll hear guys talking about what lane to get into. Rest of time its quiet. We are in Pigeon Fordge/Gatlinburg every couple of months and will hear some chatter on the interstate. Mainly hear other jeepers near town and have talked to a few in the park fine. Yesterday while heading to lowes we passed a "wide load" dragging his lights on a back road and I called him to tell him. Worked fine. All my radios are the CMX series from uniden (handheld head) and there isn't much your gonna peak or tune on those....

So does it take a 60 watt 10 meter export radio conversion running 100% plus modulation to get their attention. I pulled the CB ten years ago when I stopped driving the interstate highway to the job. It was impossible to get traffic information then when trucker radio transmissions were wide banded to say the least. I've got a corner 3/8-24 mount that works okay on 6 and 10 meters.
Well just saying the Stryker 955 does work quite well. :p

19 should be lit up on Hwy25 through TR tonight with the weather comming in. Going up and down the grade could be dicey.

And with skip becoming more common, local comms will be next to useless next 5-7 years during sunlight hours. 1 reason I left CB behind and have never missed it.

Christmas Day, 1976 my wife gave me a JC Penney Pinto and a KMart blister pack trunk lip mount antenna. In about a half hour the antenna was mounted, the coax was fed through the back seat area, under the carpet to come out under the dash.... the radio bracket was screwed to the bottom of the ash tray and the power was wired up into the dash somewhere.

I was good for years.... just like that!!!!!!!!!

Tomorrow evening, I will remove the 220 mobile and try the Cobra 25. It might work even after so many years. The VHF low slug for the Bird might indicate enough to adjust the antenna.

Slow,

Leaving the legality discussion for another day The KL203 is only 100 watts out on a good day. That plate with the CB, amp, filters, all the interconnects just waiting to come loose, and misc stuff mounted on it why do you not just go with a "MARS" modded ham radio to keep it all neat and compact?
