• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

This is a large and very visible forum. We cannot jeopardize the ability to provide the RadioReference services by allowing this activity to occur. Please respect this.

I've been looking at the Relm KNG2 radios to follow a variety of 700/800mhz P25 and Motorola Smartzone systems in my area. It says these radios are P25 compliant and work for 9600 baud systems, including Phase 2, but do any of the Relm KNG radios work on the older Motorola 3600 baud Smartzone systems? We still have a few of those over this way, and they don't appear to be going anywhere anytime soon.

Also about how much do these radios typically go for?

I have a KNG P800 and they do not do 3600 Baud systems. I am not sure if Relm is even still selling anything that does. Check the Web Site for all the radios they are selling. The brochures are quite accurate. Expect to pay around $3000 for the radio and all the accessories. Everything is an add on. The only thing the radio will do without add-ons is P25 conventional. They are great radios and do program for receive only, no affiliation.

And no Bluetooth. If you do find a used one, be sure it has P25 & TDMA installed. If not, you have to ship it to Relm and pay for each feature.

I spent a long time looking at used ones. The majority out there are VHF models. If you can show me one for sale, I'll buy it now. !!

Thank you for your input. Yes 3000 is a bit steep. I am mainly looking for 700/800 trunking with Phase 2 capability for receive only non affiliate. Now how does the programming software work? If i buy a used unit would I have to pay extra for programming software?

You have to buy the software. Once you have the software, firmware and software updates are free. Software is a few hundred. No system keys needed if you program the system as receive only

You can get a used KNG-P800 for about 1500. It will do everything the P2 does but no color screen

And no Bluetooth. And an older version of the Vocoder. And a quieter and less-clear speaker relative to the KNG2.

I bit the bullet. I found a dealer who had a limited one for 1500. It included every accessory as it was a demo unit. Including the software. I should get it Tuesday I will keep everyone updated. I had a P800 for a minute but it was not mine. Now this one is. I'll be looking forward to sharing info with people. So expect some questions from me by next week.

That's a steel if in good condition. What features are enabled in it? That's where you can add up some more bucks.
