I was looking at Amazon for a upgrade antenna for the sds-100 and I was told the rem-820s is what I want.

My question is, I see there are different lengths offered for this model? 7" and 8"

What is the difference since its only 1"

Not sure on the length, I use an 842s 8" and am very happy with the performance accross all bands. Depending on what you are listening to, the 842 is a good tri band choice.

I find the Rem-842 a little heavy, That extra two inches and the bulkiness makes a big difference over the stock antenna. As I like to just carry the SDS100 around in my hand I wounder if the extra weight and height will put a strain on the antenna connection?

I prefer portable scanners. The problem I have had with the REM-820S is the narrowed portion of the shaft.

In my opinion, the SDS 100 seems to be more stable sitting on a table due to the larger base. I kept knocking my 436HP off of the table due to the narrow base. Over time, the aforementioned upper shaft kept bending.

I don't have anymore problems since I started using the tri-band model. Both antennas a great.
