I work in Renton on saturdays and I noticed a really ugly antenna on the roof of the police cars. It's about 2 feet long and about the thickness of a broomstick. It is mounted on the roof just behind the light bar.
What's if used for? Haven't noticed that type of antenna on police cars in Kent, Auburn or Fed Way.

I've seen those in Umatilla County for 802.11/802.16 They have an encrypted server on the counties 'wi-fi- cloud, longer than 2 feet, but it is thick

Actually, I think I saw one in the Kent/Tukwila-ish area too. Unmarked Charger with three stubbys on the roof and a big thick one on the trunk.

Here, there, everywhere.
weird way to get an answer...

Oddly enough, I came to the WA state forum to ask if anyone knows what hospital Whatcom County Fire District 5 EMS transports to (Point Roberts), but in seeing this I thought I might throw my 2 cents in...

Those thick whips might be 4.9GHZ public safety wireless omni's. My city (Reading, Pennsylvania) just installed a wireless camera network and installed software in all cruisers to be able to access that network. Upon wondering some inner-workings, I found out that this net operates on a section of wireless bandwidth I had never heard of, the 4.9GHZ public safety allocation. Equipment for it is available on ebay but is extremely expensive.

Just a thought.
