RE:

I'm talking about hang time, there has to be a default setting. Not every repeater has 5, 8, 2, ya know?

There is no universal "default" hang time. Certain repeater controllers may have default settings, but they can vary from manufacturer to manufacturer. So, really, there is no default time.

And older repeaters don't have a default anything. Everything in them is adjusted by inserting and turning a tuning tool or small instrument screwdriver in a coil or cap or pot, etc. Hang time default on those that are programmable varies from 0 to 2 sec to 5 sec, etc, whatever the manufacturer and the software engineers decided would be the default value displayed in that field upon initial boot up. Default values that aren't crucial to certain operating parameters usually end up being arbitrary, and hang time seems to be one of them.

Well yes, I do know, that is why I answered with, "no default".

Now let me ask a question, why do you ask a question, get an answer and then dispute the answer when you don't know the answer to begin with?

Also, Thorny, do a search on the term "thread jacker". :?

To wx4cbh and gr8amp, thanks for the support. :D

Sorry, I thank you for helping me and I just disagreed, so sorry. Also, how do you find anything out otherwise, if you don't ask questions?

Research!
Something that you investigate and learn on your own becomes yours, not someone elses. Simple things like that Search link at the top of this page is a good starting point for all things dealing with scanning. Google is a great web search engine for general questions. And, after you have exhausted your possibilities and have to resort to asking a question, accept the answer, because if you have not found the answer elsewhere, that is all your gonna get.

BTW, when you investigate and find things out, even if you don't get the information you specifically want, at least you will know how to ask the question and what information you actually want. When you ask an informed question, you are lible to get a better answer than say... oh I don't know, like "Yes". (For reference see this topic.)

I don't understand why you are being so critical of me, you're making a mountain out of a mohill. Maybe my question do need more information when I state them, but remember you don't have to answer them. Anyways, I am sorry and I will not post again.

Perhaps you should read your posts in this thread alone. If you still don't understand my point of view, I suggest you review them again. Sooner or later it will sink in.

That is your decision, I was merely trying to point out if you continued in the manner you were going, sooner or later someone was going to really flame you.

Darn and I had just got my flamethrower and backpack fuel cell all ready.... :(

On a serious note... On a trunking scanner with good headphones you can hear the motorola disconnect tone as a deep HUMMMMM... and if you listen carefully on some systems using CDCSS.. you CAN hear the two, or three beeps of the repeater keytones.. Usually heard after a second of keyup time- beep beep... then on some systems a third beep. This is usually very soft and in the background. As far as for "squelch tail" data bursts both at the beginning of a TX, or at the end... Or on some systems, both beginning and end... with a scanner there is NO WAY to not hear them. The most notoriius data sounds being the "grasshopper, or cricket" chirps, the "dialing a phone tones" and the short fast multibeep sounds.

And what I'm still trying to figure out is that of all the things a repeater is capable of, why was the subject of such an arbitrary thing as hang time so important? Oh well, I can still remember when I didn't understand all I knew about radios and systems either. Now what I understand is how little I do know about radios and systems, especially this new fangled digital trunking stuff.

I am not sure what you mean by this. You can't hear the tones, they are sub-audible. Yes your radio may hum a bit, but it is not passing a 151.4 Hz tone. :D

I can hear PL Tones on every scanner and ham transciever I own, as long as it's not set to Tone Squelch. When the radio is set to Carrier Squelch the tone is not filtered and is passed through to the speaker. It sounds different for each tone.

This is the case on my BC-780, BC-796, AR-8200 (especially), TM-742, VX-5R, TH-79AD, PRO-92 and my old school Radio Shack base scanner of which I can't recall the model number. The handhelds need an external speaker (of any quality by the way) to produce the tone only because the little tinny (Yes that's tinny not tiny) speaker inside can't reproduce the proper frequency range.
