And he does it all on a salary of $27.50 a week. Check out those qsl cards.

After a few beers she'll get to the robe and slippers. They are part of the "great" generation, the parents of the Baby Boomers. Love her outfit, looks just like an airline stewardess. Yowza.

Radio Babes have have always been a hit :giggle:

I have that very radio in photo #1--an Atwater Kent... works beautifully still...

(The picture above I use in my RR Forum profile.... she was quite the girl !---- note the gas lamp over her table... any guess's how she is powering her spark transmitter if the house was plumbed for gas ? :) )

You would probably have a better idea of when that photo of Kathleen Parkin was taken. I had heard of her before and searched for her but all I could find was this photo and no other information including the date and place.

I think I do remember this photo and a photo of you boarding a plane in the Antarctic on your previous profile, unfortunately on this profile your details are hidden and you choose who sees them.

My guess on electricity would be that household had converted over to electricity, big cities, converted over early in the century but by 1910 it was pretty much widespread even in the suburbs. They probably left the gas plumbing alone even though it was totally disconnected.

Just a guess, I could be wrong. :)

Hi Trent :)

She is Gladys Kathleen Parkin (September 27, 1900 – August 3, 1990) was one of the earliest and youngest women to obtain a first-class government-issued radio license. That photo is ca. 1915--

She said as a young teenager;

"..........With reference to my ideas about the wireless profession as a vocation or worthwhile hobby for women, I think wireless telegraphy is a most fascinating study, and one which could very easily be taken up by girls, as it is a great deal more interesting than the telephone and telegraph work, in which so many girls are now employed. I am only fifteen, and I learned the code several years ago, by practicing a few minutes each day on a buzzer. I studied a good deal and I found it quite easy to obtain my first grade commercial government license, last April. It seems to me that every one should at least know the code, as cases might easily arise of a ship in distress, where the operators might be incapacitated, and a knowledge of the code might be the means of saving the ship and the lives of the passengers. But the interest in wireless does not end in the knowledge of the code. You can gradually learn to make all your own instruments, as I have done with my 1/4 kilowatt set. There is always more ahead of you, as wireless telegraphy is still in its infancy..............."
