I was at the East Portal to the Moffat Tunnel (Rollinsville, CO) today listening to the RR band and heard what sounded almost identical (except shorter in duration) to an ACARS transmission on 161.250(?) Any ideas on what thats used for?

You made me so envious reading that! I love that area. I also remember when that pass was open. A very nice drive it was, and is until you come to the dead-end.

Ever head off south over to that tiny town that's up there?

That's probably the ATCS signal, which sends the flag and signal indications for the different control points.

This site will tell you about ATCS:
http://www.atcsmon.com/

This site is a representation of the data for the Moffat Tunnel area:
http://www.underwesternskies.net/atcs_moffat/atcs_moffat.htm

This Yahoo Group actually discusses how to be successful with ATCSMON software:
http://finance.groups.yahoo.com/group/ATCS_Monitor/

I'm able to watch the signals down here in the Tucson area, leading into and away from the Tucson yard with this software...

Wow! Great info!
If I listen to the samples on that site, I would have to say what I heard was 300 baud ARES protocol.

I looked at Topo 5.0 and see American City and Nugget. It appears both can be reached from the trail that starts in Tolland. They look like old mining towns (ghost towns?) as both are above 10,000 ft.
Do you smell that? I do too - another off-road excursion for me and the Tacoma!
