I noticed one thing that differs from my old GRE / RS models: the default RSSI values for the S-meter differ quite a bit. I noticed it when re-reading Mark's awesome Easier-to-read manual web page...

1040 Default values:
Bar 1 190
Bar 2 230
Bar 3 260
Bar 4 290
Bar 5 320

In my old Pro106 and PSR 500, the values were
Bar 1 370
Bar 2 450
Bar 3 520
Bar 4 610
Bar 5 680

Marks great page had a recommendation of running 470/540/610/680/750 for these, but these values were for the older 106/500 etc.

Has anyone tweaked the values of their 1040, and do they differ significantly from Mark's recommendations? I tried Mark's values and naturally being a lot higher, the s-meter bars aren't even working.

So the Whistler isnt *just* a rehash after all. And for now, my on/off volume pot is nice and clean and not scratchy. Hope it stays that way.

I tweaked the values for my TRX-1 because they were pretty useless to start with and I'm happier now. If I remember correctly, I tried to make the numeric difference between each level be close to the difference that Mark's suggestions were, but I ended up tweaking slightly more from there. I'll have to look up the numbers later, but since you have the WS-1040 they may not work well for you.

My PRO-106 came from my mother-in-law who smoked. The volume is extremely scratchy. I bought my PSR-500 new and I'm a non-smoker. It's as quiet as the day I bought it. That tells me something.

My values are:
Bar # Def. My values
1. 190. 241
2. 230. 276
3. 260. 305
4. 290. 322
5. 320. 352

I have no way of calibrating my radio properly, of course. This just made the bars mean something for me. I think they were much too generous in the default values. But YMMV, obviously.

Interestingly, the defaults were the same as your 1040...

No smoking here - '106 pot got the classic scratch.

RSSI bar values - yep, adjusting them to one's preference seems to be the best, but it makes me wonder if/why they are changed from the older units - changing the 1040's values to the older values more or less disables the s/bar meter.

Sooo... does that indicate an improvement in RSSI and all that is dependent upon that aside from just an s-meter reading? Some sort of real improvment, or cosmetic value change?

I'll have to leave that one to Wendy...
