RTL.SDR HF RX Issues

So many answers that do not help and yet the answer is simple though not included with the box and takes some time to find (but I did when I bought one).

To make the black box work on HF, go to Configure and change the sampling mode from Quadrature Sampling to Q sampling.


In case you missed what I said earlier, I did receive the signal from the signal generator.

You MUST use Direct Samping (Q branch) under Configure for HF with SDRSharp when using that particular SDR to make it work properly. I see no mention that you have done that. And pick RTL AGC. And an HF antenna--something like10-40 feet or so. No offset in frequency. If you are not doing this, it will not properly work when trying to receive HF. Be sure to set gain high. Also, some setting cannot be changed unless you use Stop rather that Play. I am using exactly the box you have at this moment around 5 MH--plenty of signals. I cannot find where you mention receiving signal generator in the thread but unless you are doing what I just said, it will not properly receive HF.

The box he showed contains a modified (to extend the frequency range) one of the usb SDRs and using the procedure I described to switch filtering and antennas. It does not need a downconverter due to the modifications.

Of course I meant to say it does not need an upconverter.

In the upconverter opposite? Meaning when its in passthrough mode its actually getting your hf stuff and when in the other mode (conversion mode) its actually gets your regular stuff above hf?

I know this sounds strange but my converter box had the labelling backwards and thats how I have to listen properly. Atleast when I bought mine through Amazon this point was actually made in the listing description. So I knew this part ahead of time.

As far as I know, I'm doing everything correctly. I tried it with the switch in either position and no joy.

I remember reading somewhere that some boxes were screen printed incorrectly.

I think mine is printed correctly because when I switched to "pass through", it stopped picking up the signal from my generator. I ordered mine directly from the company through their website.

Update:

I switched back to the RTL.SDR just to see what would happen. I hooked it up to my signal generator and set the generator to 1.620 MHz. Nothing. I then switched the input from the "HF" connector to the "UV" connector and got a signal. In the screenshot, I have the weird shift setting because when I first received the signal the SDR was saying it was on 1.920 MHz. In the second image, the SDR is connected to my antenna.

If you're now getting those am broadcast stations then your hf stuff should all be coming to you now.

You'll have much better luck though in getting your signals sorted out and you'll see them alot clearer if you pull your "Range" down. You have it set to high. Pull it down and you'll see your stations easier.

and set your shift to -125,000,000

Bandwidth for HF AM usually is best at about 4000 also not 10,000.

Just my luck...
Immediately after I got the NooElec working, the RF input connector on the converter broke off.

I want to thank dlwtrunked for his solution to this issue.
I had the exact same issue that the original poster had at the start of this thread:
I have the SDR dongle show in post 10 of this thread.
I was unable to get any input on the HF antenna input connector.

dlwtrunked posted the fix:

You don't have to add any offset or anything else to the SDRSharp config after you follow his instructions.

I just received one of these Chinese receivers today and knew I had to adjust something but could not remember what it was. I saw one work so I was sure I was missing something. As soon as I changed to "Direct Sampling (Q branch)" everything came to life.

I hope the OP saw your response. It is probably exactly what he needed.
