It's amazing they weren't turned off after no longer needed.

They have been on for years.

We used them occasionally with non DAMA nets using VINSON voice.

Most of them are “Bent Pipes” so what you send is what you get back.

Some of the newer AEHF spots require DAMA operation.

But 80% are just open.

How is DAMA network actually controlled? I find a lot of documents on the structure but not the actual controller

Newer radios have built in DAMA, older radios used an external device.

I'm not up on DAMA but I believe its single frequency and it just keeps conversations from colliding. It also uses LPC10 digital voice and usually Vinson encryption.

DAMA is AD HOC based voice and data communication. It uses super narrow channels (5khz) and usually TDMA.
