Yes, the same police department is using multiple sites (say 6-7 different sites). My question is, if I just scan one site would I still be picking up those same transmissions/ talk groups? OR, is it just by chance my scanner is picking up the same department on different sites?

They use whatever site they or another member of the TG is affiliated to, if there are no units associated to the site you will not here traffic on it.

I understand. I’m just hearing the same units on 6 or 7 different sites. Are all those sites transmitting the same thing each time a unit transmits? The reason I’m asking is because, if I don’t need to scan as many sites I’ll be less likely to miss something.

as long as there is at least one unit affliated to the site you are listening too you will hear all the traffic

Again, if someone on the TG is using that site you will hear all the TG traffic, however if none of the units are on the site it will be silent with no traffic from the TG, that is how affiliation works.

There is an exception to this statement. For purposes of scan on the radios, some sites may be set to carry a talkgroup within a site whether or not a radio is affiliated to the TG within that site.

Very true, I was talking about non-assigned or non-primary sites
