Correct, Sarnia Fire has left (or is in the process of leaving) the city EDACS system and is switching to MotoTRBO. Once the testing and switchover is complete, that channel will go digital.

The last time I was in Sarnia I noticed the police cars have the 800 Mhz cell antenna's on their cars. I really don't think it is for cell phones, perhaps they have moved into the 800 mhz police radios.
This is just an observation, I guess some one who lives in Sarnia could confirm. Seems odd that they would have cell phone antennas on the cars as they are not required for cell phones.
So I guess what I am saying is that I wonder if they are on the Apco radios.

Sarnia Police are still VHF. They are using Motorola P25 radios, but are (for the most part) fully encrypted.

Just speculating but maybe the cellphone antennas are for mdt's?

Could be. I was in Sarnia this morning and the PD are most definitely still VHF.

Why wouldn't they have cell phone antennas? My vehicle has several cellphone antennas and they are all for cellphones or cellular data devices.

I don't see many cars with cell phone antennas anymore as most cell phones that I have seen have no port to hook one up, nor do they even have an external antenna anymore as far as I know. I thought that car cell phone antennas had gone by the wayside. I never thought though about the mdt's, that would make more sense.

Which vehicle are you talking about?

The Crown Vic in the last picture with the on glass antenna on the rear window or the van beside it with the on glass antenna on the front windshield??

They're both look like cellular antennas to me. Wouldn't surprise me if they had some sort of in car kit or hookup for a laptop.

The crown vic. Its on the back window.. Their "unmarked detective" cars all have the cell antennas also.. The vic is also a det car. But the normal marked units just have the VHF antenna and spectras. Never saw any laptops in any of the cars or mounts for them

Couldn't help notice the 'Kenwood by Thames' sticker on the command centre rig. Dunno where they use Kenwood radios. I've got pictures of London's mobile command unit somewhere. They have some neat toys in there, including an older Unider scanner.

Thames Communications on Sass rd in chatham. They do all the radios for public works, chatham knt fire and police.. and seems alot of little biz radios in essex ck and lambton. They promote the kenwood stuff more then the macom.. for commerical use anyways. Maybe the kenwoods are to communicate with the roads dept or something on the convention channels? Or perhaps the BWB?

Bluewater Bridge folks have Motorola's from what I've seen, but it's not to say they don't have others as well. CBSA uses HT1250's.

The Kenwood sticker is likely more for advertisement than anything. Any idea who maintains Sarnia PS's radios? I would guess maybe Spectrum but I'm not sure. No clue who handles London's Ma-Comm stuff.

I think its spectrum on confed.. But not 100%. I was asking some questions there last year... And they wouldnt give me tomany replys.
And iv been told that LPS does their own radios. They dont out source i guess.. They buy their own radios and install them. But who owns the system they are on is the question. And how does the other users on there get their radios... Guess ill have to ask a public works guy or a commissionarie

You don't need an antenna port to hook up an external antenna.

Just as the on glass antenna doesn't need a direct connection between the inside and outside pieces, the phone doesn't need a direct connection to the car kit.

My Blackberry doesn't have an antenna port yet there's an external antenna hooked up to it's car kit.

The London system is owned by the city according to the Technology page on the LPS website. It vaguely describes how the system was designed and built for LPS first, with the intent to move other city services over as their radios need upgrades/replacement etc etc. Makes sense I guess. No sense paying someone else for airtime. Never did understand why London Fire didn't migrate over thru the years.
