Please pardon what is likelly a really dumb noob question, but here goes. I live in Savannah GA. I often scan the Marine channels for activity, since I live very close to the river (very large container port) and the beach. "Savannah Pilots"uses channel 14 for ship to shore communications with inbound ships and I hear their TX loud and clear even on my crappiest HT. But I only hear their side of the conversation. That channel isn't listed for an offset that I'm aware of, and anything with codes would get complicated for all ships/nations/companies to use I assume. It sounds like they have enough issues with communicating with some captains as it is with langauge differences (I can only assume, since I just hear the english half with a southern accent). And again, be gentle. I feel like I'm probably asking a really idiotic question with an answer that should have been obvious.

You most likely need a base antenna to be able to receive the ships or monitor closer to river.

The pilots base station is most likely closer to you. Vessel are tough to receive with being underway on water.

Yes marine channel 14 is simplex with all transmitting 156.700 MHz.
