Maybe if you stop streaming their comms over the internet they won't encrypt their traffic. Just food for thought.

To add, not a good idea to share law enforcement information overheard on the scanner on the internet ....

If they didn’t encrypt basic police communications they wouldn’t have a problem. Same problem same coin. The issue was created once the PD turned the switch on. This endless encryption needs to stop not only are you ruining the hobby for everyone but they are also killing the prospects of younger generations getting into the radio and communications industry. I got so into radios because my grandfather always listened to scanners when I was younger and after joining the FD it became even more of an interest to me. I’ve learned what I know from listening and reading stuff on here and other sources, my kid may not have the same luxury. It’s a damn shame that everyone hides behind “officer safety” as the reason for encryption when we all know that’s a total crock of **** And it’s only done because they can and because salesmen push it. Encryption is killing the industry more than its helping it. Pretty soon we will all be listening to transit buses and DPW’s. There should be a law against encrypting main communication channels, Colorado tried to do it without success but that doesn’t mean we shouldn’t try.

And before anyone comes back with a wise *** comment about how I should run for office if i wanna change it just think about what you say before you say it, you’re part of the problem not the solution.

Ahh the good old JCFD encryption rumor haha its a damn shame they operate more on their conventional then their digital. It’s also been a rumor for the past 5 years they’ll encrypt but it hasn’t happened. I’ll believe that when I actually see it. Good thing if it does actually go encrypted itll just be dispatch so you won’t miss much there.

As long as it’s not an officer safety issue there’s no reason you can’t share the info. That doesn’t mean you post every call on social media but if you hear something about a bank robbery, a shooting, a crime scene or some other more “major” event there’s absolutely no reason why you can’t and shouldn’t share that info if that’s your prerogative. Before the days of social media the news literally used to pay someone to sit at a desk and listen to scanners all day to send guys job hunting for news there’s no difference now except you can reach a broader audience much more easily with social media.

This is the number 1 reason for encryption right here. NotATechGuy hit the nail on the head. If streaming wasn’t so easily accessible it wouldn’t be an issue. Now joe blow criminal can download an app on his burner and listen to local PDs with zero skills or knowledge on how to work a scanner or radio. Broadcastify is the number one reason for encryption which I also find ironic is run by the same people who run RR, so the site that was created to feed the love for radios that we all have is actually the major contributor to what I call the “encryption epidemic” and the killing of the hobby.

My whole point to posting this was to notify the fellow hobbyists & buffs out there so they know why it went dark and silent and to point out that encrypting fire communications serves absolutely zero purpose and there is simply no justification for it.
I think your post and follow-up comments have accomplished that. Therefore, this thread is closed.

If any of you care to continue the debate about live audio feeds and encryption, we have a thread for that:
