I found an old SC150 in a drawer that I had forgotten about. Needless to say the battery is dead and beyond charging.

I was wondering if anyone knew of a way to convert the proprietary battery pack to one that I can use AAs with like my other two portable scanners. I know they make a 9V "backup" conversion but I would really like to go AA. If there is a commercial conversion (or even a homebrew for that matter) for the battery pack can someone please post em a link or a how to?

I thought about going that route. It won't work as I happen to have two of those laying around (that came with my PSR-500 and Pro-95's respectively. The battery holder is to wide to fit in the Sportcat. The battery pack that comes with the SC150 is basically 4 wrapped AAs that just barely fit the width of the scanner. The battery pack from GRE is to wide to fit,as a matter of fact its the same width as the scanner is. :)

I just ordered a sc150b off of ebay and was researching it.. I'm sure the batt pack in it wont be 100%.. But, IF a person is good with a soldering gun why not solder some wire to the batteries to hook them up in series, reuse the factory plug and wrap them up with zip ties. I was thinking of electrical tape at first but i 'm not sure how hot the new nicads would get. I think though, Lower voltage meaning a slower charge rate meaning less heat. Elect tape might work to wrap em up. I know my rechargeable energizers get reallly warm, almost hot using the wall charging unit.

Well looking on ebay just now, 2600 NIMH batteries for the Sportcat are only $7. + $4. shipping.. Yeah thats actually less fuss and less money than buying NIMH batts at walmart and doing it yourself..

I couple of possibilities come to mind. Check with

BATTERIES AMERICA

They will sell you a new pack or, I believe, rebuild your old pack. I think they'd also sell you the necessary shrink wrap to do it yourself.

Another possibility if you don't mind the battery being external to the radio is to buy one of the Radio Shack four cell AA holders, put the appropriate plug on it, and use it as an external power supply. It's a great way to carry four rechargeable AAs and to change them quickly without much trouble. It even has a built-in slide switch.

I made a battery pack for my BC250D using AAs and wrapped them with electrical tape, it worked just fine. The only problem is that battery packs are normally made with "flat top" cells so the pack I made from AAs didn't fit in the scanner quite right.

I would recommend just getting one (or two) of these packs on ebay. I bought 2 of them and they work great. I have since taken apart the pack I made to use those AAs for other things.
