Hey Everyone!

If you haven't met me yet, my name is Joe Slitzker, I'm a full time medic and System Status Controller for EMSA. Radio has been a long time hobby of mine. PeterJMag is also into public safety as much as I am. We have both gotten together and decided we would like to have a club for the Tulsa area similar to the one that Oklahoma City has. We are both new, but are game for starting the club and coordinating it. Above is a poll, please provide us with your vote and your input! We are open to all ideas and suggestions. Thanks for your input in advance!

Ours is open to everyone that wishes to attend! I think it would be cool if you guys started your own club. Maybe we could coordinate the dates and attend each others meetings..

Thanks Foster! I think that would be really cool. We're going to need some help from you guys, and probably count on your club for some things. PJMag and I are both new at this and may be looking to you for advice. I think it's really cool what you have done down there and hope that ours can be as active as yours.

Please continue your votes and comments/suggestions on how we should run our club!

For those of you who voted maybe, can you leave some input on what would make you want to participate and what wouldn't?

The "Maybe" Vote

Well, it's mostly a matter of scheduling and time.

Scanning is a hobby, but it's a secondary for me. There's some that would say I must be a scanner freak, since mine is on about 18 hours a day - but the truth is, I'm an Amateur Radio operator, and at least 1/2 my scanning is related to that.

I'm also an active storm spotter, do a number of public service events where amateur radio provides comm support, and I'm President of the Tulsa Amateur Radio Club (which means one night a month for the meeting, one for the board meeting, on for the newsletter article (at least) and usually one more for some public service event or another.

Add in a couple of teenagers, and I just really can't say whether I'd ever make it or not. It would probably depend on the day.

The "Maybe" Vote

Well, it just comes down to scheduling.

I'm an amateur radio operator, and currently the president of the Tulsa Amateur Radio Club. That involves one night of the club meeting, one for the board meeting, one more for the newsletter article I have to write every month. Throw in a public service event or night of storm spotting, and a couple of teenagers for good measure, and whether I make ANY get-together on any particular night just depends on the night.

OK, I think we've set a tenative date, but I don't have a calander handy, but I'll try to get PJMag to get on here and post it for everyone's consideration. If you're able to attend please let us know. We need everyone that can participate to do so, so we can pull this together. Strength in numbers here. Also, does anybody have any suggestions for us to cover in our meeting, or any other comments?

We have decided to plan a meeting on May 17 which is a Tueday at 7:00 P.M. We still have not decided where the meeting will be held. Joe and I are open to all possibilities. We would appreciate any feedback on if the current date is good for eveyone and where we should have this meeting? We want as many of you to attend as possible. Please post us back any feedback on where it should be held as well as if the date will be okay for everyone. Thanks...

One suggestion is just a general introduction, to put the name (user name) with the face. Maybe brain storm some Ideas on how to alert other in this group of breaking incidents, other than IPN etc. Looking at my calander that evening is open for me.

May 17th!?!

May 17th (and the 3rd Tuesday of EVERY month) is the Tulsa Amateur Radio Club meeting at Jones Riverside Airport TTC campus.

The May meeting will have John Thomason and Coy Day (the OK section manager and West Gulf division director) from the ARRL doing our presentation.

The TARC meetings are always a great place to learn a lot about radios, RF, and to meet some top notch radio techs (including several professional RF engineers) that can answer all kinds of questions.

But having the scanner meeting opposite the Ham meeting kind of limits a good chunk of your user base.

My 2¢

No problem Jay. Thanks for bringing that to our attention. We will go back to the drawing board. Anyone suggest any days? How about Monday May 16 at 7:00?

That is a really good facility. They have a whole 27 parked outside for students to work on as opposed the chopped section that Spartan has.

And it is cheaper .. :)

Hey Jay do you have to be part of a club or part of the TTC Riverside campus in order to use their meeting rooms? I think that would be an outstanding place to hold a ScanTulsa meeting. What do you think?

No, anyone can get a room there. But it's $25 a shot.

Better choices are:

1. Most public libraries in the Tulsa City/County Library system have conference rooms. They're free, up to 12 times a year per organization. My wife works at the library if you want to go that route. She can check availability of all branches across the city. (If you call, you get that one branch only, because most librarians won't go to the trouble to look at other branches.

2. TU - There's an active amateur radio club at the University of Tulsa. They have access to classrooms and auditoriums in the Engineering building. This is also free, but requires a contact with a TU student or professor. I have one, (an EE professor that's a ham) but I'd rather not abuse it. But if someone ELSE knew someone at TU, or would join the TU ham club....
TU is also free - except for the favor factor.
