PRO-93 battery

I've read down the other replies and someone mentioned to check the switch in the battery compartment. This seems like the most likely source of your problem. If you are using regular Alkaline batteries and the SWITCH is set to rechargeable, then it's probably trying to charge your alkaline batteries. Double check that switch -- it's critical.

Pro-93 does not have a switch. it has the black and yellow battery holders.

PRO-93 owners manual.

Pages 10, 11, and 12 talk about power.

Black battery holder can hold rechargeable or non-rechargeable batteries but will not charge the batteries if the radio is plugged into a 12 volt or 110 power supply. If you want to use the black battery holder you will need to buy an external battery charger like I mentioned above.
Yellow battery holder is for rechargeable batteries ONLY. It will recharge the batteries while they are in the scanner when using external power. You never, ever, ever put nonrechargable batteries in the yellow battery holder.
Like someone mentioned above you can use the yellow holder for your NI-MI rechargables and keep a set of regular nonrechargable in the black holder for when you are caught out and about without a charger.
One last note...
Some people never recharge their batteries in the scanner perferring to use an external charger, others use the builtin charging circuit in the scanner by just plugging the external power supply into the scanner. I do both myself depending on the sitution at the time.

This is what I've been saying all along. I bought the scanner. I put some REGULAR batteries in the black holder (it only came with the black holder-I got it used). Pluged the power supply in the wall. A couple of hours later when I grabbed the scanner It Was Hot in the battery compartment...I wish I could send a picture of the corrosion on the outside of the scanner and the battery holder. I am not using "government batteries". I bought a set of 2000mAh AA Ni-Mh before this problem started. I am afraid to invest in another black holder or even a yellow holder until this problem of hot batteries is resolved.

Put the NI-MI's in. Even if there is something wrong or modified with the black holder the worst that would happen is the batteries would recharge. I would suggest popping for the yellow holder and go from there.
If you have a multimeter...(Use caution, correct use is up to you)
Plug the scanner in without the battery pack. You should get approx 12 volts dc (no load reading) between the two outside terminals in the battery compartment and no reading between ether outside terminal and the center one. If you do it needs to be repaired.
By outside terminal I mean if you numbered the terminals 1,2,3 the reading would be between 1 and 3 and there should be no reading between 1 and 2 or 2 and 3.
If you get the correct readings then go ahead and buy the yellow battery holder and you should be all set using the NI-MI batteries only, of course.
If all else fails you can always get another set of NI-MI's and an external charger and just switch the batteries every so often based on your needs.

The yellow battery case is for the RECHARGABLE batteries only. If you will notice the yellow case has three contacts and the black case has two contacts. Reason: The 3rd contact on the yellow case is tied into the charging system in the radio it self. The black case has only two contacts so that the internal charging circuit is not conected when you plug into an AC or DC adapter. USE THE BLACK CASE FOR REGULAR BATTERIES AND THE YELLOW CASE FOR RECHARGABLE BATTERIES ONLY. Like i said a few days ago, go to walmart and get the 2500 nickel metal hydride batteries.

It's the other way around. You do not want batteries that have a memory. NI-MH batteries do not have a charge memory so you can recharge them whenever.

Sorry, but that's not correct. Read the other thread on batteries going around this forum. NiMHs are less prone to memory effect, but ARE NOT IMMUNE.
