Could someone tell me the connectors I need to connect my scanner to an outdoor antenna. I am planning on purchasing a Uniden 800MHz Base/Mobile 300 channel Scanner from Walmart. I am going to connect it to a
Outdoor VHF-Hi/UHF Scanner Antenna from Radio Shack. I attached a photo of the antenna. I need to know what connector to use for the antenna end of the coax, and what connector I need for the scanner end of the coax. Also if anyone knows if this antenna will reach my surrounding counties.

Thank you so much, John.. Morehead, Ky.

Take a lQQk at some more options !

FYI~You might lQQk at this scanner antenna also from Radio Shack
as an option to buying the $29.99 RS 20-176 plus coax cable and 2 adapters, etc.
In addition to better distance reception it will work out cheaper in cost to you.
However, the ST2 at 7ft tall it can to some lQQk obnoxious astetically. If you have
strict HOA rules, then I say the 20-176 is way more stealthy to your neighbors !

Keep in mind the 20-176 covers 108-1300MHz with peak performance occurring mainly
in the 152-470MHz range and "may" not do as well in the 800/900 bands, but since
I think you are lQQking at non-trunking analog scanner this may not be a big deal to you.
Tell us how much that Walmart special is and just maybe there are better GREater deals :)
For instance if I needed to keep a scanner purchase closer to $100 bucks and still get the
best bang for my buck feature and value wise I would snag a Radio Shack Pro-107 iScan.
It does alpha-text tags, tripple trunking, supports multi-site trunking and it very easy to use.
With the complete built-in RR database of every state and county, you simply jump down the
main menu to browse library to your state and county, pick and import what YOU want to hear.
One does not need to know why the rocket flies, rather just push the button and it flys approach.
Also, it comes with about $100 of stuff most other scanners DO NOT come with as added value.
You get PC software, a USB PC cable and lifetime updates to the onboard SD card RR database.
It's GREat for a newbie and you can be up and running in no time as long as you don't need digital.
This RS Pro-107 iScan is only $129 as either catalog # 20-107 or refurbished catalog # 20-0052.

Don't think that the connector must be the same on both ends of your coax. This is only to make it easier for them to make it up, but often it's best to have different ones on each end. If you can, order your cable with the correct connectors on your coax (often a PL-259 on the antenna end and a BNC on the scanner end, but verify prior to ordering to get this correct). This will give you a lower loss solution as well as making it more difficult for water to enter your coax. Adapters are there to make things work, but if you get it right initially you can eliminate them, their associated loss and hassle.

The antenna image you show appears to be the Radio Shack 20-176 antenna. It has a SO239 connector. The coax at that end needs a PL239 connector.

You didn't say what model of scanner you are getting. Scanners usually have either an SMA or BNC connector.

A fourth connector type you will often see is the F-connector that is commonly used in cable TV.

If you are not comfortable attaching the correct type of connector on each end, then you either need to get custom cables made or use adaptors.

The wikipedia entries for UHF (PL259/SO259), BNC, SMA and F-connectors have good descriptions and photos.

I use (3) RS20-176 antennas, 2 in the attic and one up 35' on the tower...They work GREAT on all bands even on 700/800 here on the ILL Digital Starcom 700/800 system....I use LMR400 coax and thats what makes the antenna work so good....U need a PL259 male on the antenna end and a BNC female adapter plug on the radio end if u get PL259 connectors on both ends....

I purchased 50' of coax. The only one I could find had the PL259 on each end. What is the name of the adapter that I need to go in between the PL259 and the scanner. I have a Bnc plug that one end goes in the scanner and the other end is for a regular tv cable plug to screw on. Is there a Bnc plug that will go in between the PL259 and the scanner. I have a Bnc to plug for the scanner, but the other end of it is for a regular tv cable to screw on to. Is there anything I can put in between that end and the PL259 and the cable end of that Bnc. I've probably confused you by now, I think I've confused myself.
thanks, John...Morehead Ky.

I think I might have found what I need....is the attached image the right plug to go from the PL259 and my scanner....I sure hope so..thanks again for everyoneshekp

Yes,that is the piece you would need to attach the coax to your scanner,it is called a SO-239.
