Scanner Detector OPP

Iv had mu orion mobiles, MRK's and uniden 250D in my ex OPP Impala with the same antennas as they had and they stoped me during a ride program once and i was hearing the same thing they were on their radio and they just said what do you all get on your radio and can you talk back on it? Said nope.. cant talk back and they said perfect! If you see anything strange let us know.. So seemed they didnt give a care at all for what i had in the car

Again, the police may 'keep an eye on who listens' but the cops will also be able to clearly differentiate between most of the people who frequent this board and the street racing types.

I can understand the interest in the technical aspects of a 'scanner detector' but the bottom line is that in Ontario having a scanner in your vehicle is legal.

Exactly...i dont have a massive piece of aluminum siding strapped to the back hood of my car, nor do i have 48-inch rims, i dont think the cops will be mistaking me for a street racer anytime soon

street racers are big ito scanners. i seen a special on date line or 20/20...one of those news/documentery shows anyways and all the scouts for the nights races had scanners and as soon as the cops got call for something that required a few bodies, the scouts called on frs or cellphone that the coast was clear for action. CFTO did a story a while back on street racing and a joint police task force Opp/peel/metro to combat street racing. Then even talked about encripted radio's so the racers could'nt moniter them. its just cat and mouse game.

Hopefully the Darwin effect will kick in a little more and all the "street racers" out there (most tend to be 19 year olds whos parents bought them a 93 Civic Hatchback which they put cheap K&N air filters and a loud annoying exhaust on and suddenly thing they can drive like they own a F1 Car) will take theirselves out one by one without taking out innocent ppl. I see so many "ricers" that have run into crap all by theirselves because they were driving like idiots its not even funny, good old Darwin will take car of these individuals as they eradicate theirselves from the gene pool

Well hopefully the OPP will start smushing cars soon... I think that'll be an awesome deterrant to street racing. It'd sure be nice to see a social stigmatism associated with street racing as you see with DWI.

I wonder if the mercurial Ontario electorate are willing to wait for the social stigmatism to take hold. It took years of education campaigns to make drinking and driving unacceptable to Ontarians, depending on the area of the province.

YRP's already doing it...

That picture / story is over a year old. They haven't done much else since then. I suspect it was because of the very negative feedback that YRP got for that.

Scanner detectors won't be of much use anyway. Pretty much every car on the road these days has a dual band scanner built into it.

Mine has XM as well so that makes it a tri-band scanner!

To nudge this slightly back on topic... I've noticed lately some of the OPP cars on the 407 have small, panel-like antennas on the side of the lightbar pointed to right.

Are these for nabbing truckers running the ETR without a transponder?

First of all, the OPP dropped the VG2 for the Spectre. Currently the Spectre is up to version 3. Only one detector currently out there is undetectable by the Spectre although it's rumoured that Version 4 will beat that one. Time will tell.

The OPP do not run Lojack and they definitely do not have a scanner detector. Since scanners are legal, what would be the point. Sounds like somebody is getting paranoid.

It's possible they suspect criminals in the area are using radios and the reference was to a specific receiver and antenna that this one cruiser has.

It wouldn't be the first time that the OPP were monitoring criminals using radios.

I know the scanners are legal in Ontario but I think it is illegal to have one operating while driving. I was told that once...I will look into it some more...

Manitoba is the only province that has a law like that on the books.

The only time they are illegal in Ontario (and any other Province) is if you use them while in commission of a crime (IE, your lookout has one to warn you when the Police get dispatched). Aside from that, they're good to go anywhere except as Bryan said, in Manitoba.

Reminds me of that dolt on Scanont a few years ago who was tooling around on his new scanner and found a very strange station at 98.100 MHz that was playing music.
