What's the deal with needing a permit to carry a scanner??? Is that along the lines of states outlawing radar detectors? Seems rather silly.

My understanding was that the permit to transport a scanner was largely unique to Michigan.

Minnesota has a similar law. Indiana has an even more restrictive law that basically says you can't have a scanner outside of your home. Florida has a scanner law as well, but has been interpreted to mean that the scanner must use either power from the vehicle, and external antenna, or both.

There are several Midwest states that require permits or have other restrictions, including Indiana, Minnesota, Kentucky and Michigan.

Illinois has no such restrictions thanks to the efforts of CARMA and SABRE members who lobbied legistators in Springfield and Chicago to beat back proposed IL state laws and a Chicago city ordinance that would have prohibited or restricted scanner use. As a result the Chicago City Council passed a reasonable ordinace that prohibits the use of a scanner in the commission of a crime.

Having been born & raised in Virginia, one of two states in which radar detectors are illegal, the law makes perfect sense to me. Why allow retailers to sell something that is specifically made to assist you breaking the law?

Never owned a radar detector, and in 30 years, have only known two people that have had them, and neither currently do.

But a scanner isn't specifically designed to break the law...is it? It can be used to that end but so can bolt cutters, wire hangers and the internet. I agree with radar detector laws, it's the scanner laws that are a little confusing.

Yes, prehaps I wasn't clear in my earlier post. Certainly the scanner is not made specifically for breaking the law like a radar detector is. It's hard to get hours on enjoyment from your radar detector by setting it on the table next to you while you watch TV! :D
