Brand new to the site here. Looking for recomendations on purchasing a scanner. Local police & fire are said to be on a 800 mega-hertz system. Any suggestions would be appreciated! Tanner

Welcome to RR.com, Tanner486. You will find a lot of information on this site as well as many people that are ready, willing, and particularly able to answer any questions you might have. First, though, you have got to give us enough information to be able to help you. The United States is a very large place, so not knowing WHERE you are, in much narrower terms, is going to greatly limit what kind of answers you will receive.

That being said, I urge you to return to your User CP (the left side of the second blue bar from the top of any page if you are logged in) and edit your profile to include your location (city and state) as you were requested to do in the material e-mailed to you when you registered. Once you fill in your location it will automatically show in each of your posts. Many of the questions you will have, and their answers, are going to be location specific and without having your location showing you will be asked over and over again what it is. So fill it in now and be done with it.

You can also look through the specs given for each radio in the RR Wiki to get an idea of the type of scanner that would interest you.

Again, welcome and remember that anything in blue and underlined is a hot link to another location.

Welcome. Each system in the database usually lists whether a system is analog or digital (mostly shown as P25). A given system can be on 800mhz, but will be either analog or digital. Knowing the difference and buying accordingly is about a $300 difference. Here in Sacramento, nearly everything I want to monitor is analog, so I spent no more than $200 on both scanners I have (both were on sale for $99). Other metro areas are almost all digital, which means spending at least $500 for one scanner. Ask around in you state forum for the area you want to monitor and pay attention to what people are doing in your area.
