You can manually program your scanner, but using that cable and the software listed in the WIKI will make the programming much easier. Most of the software does require a fairly small amount to purchase it, but nearly all have a free 30 day trial period. It's important that you use the free 30 day period to make sure the software works for you, your scanner, your PC, etc.

Nearly all of the software will allow access to all of your scanner's features so that's not how you should select which one to use. The main difference in the software is how you interact with it (for example some are like a spreadsheet while others may use lists for their data). I haven't heard about issues with having more than one installed so load them all up and try each several times as you learn more about your scanner and how to setup the various features. It's also a good idea that once you discover a feature you like using one application to see how to access it using the others if the feature is important to you. One may have it easy to access while another may force you to go through several menu selections to get to it.

will that software also work for my Radio Shack pro-97? I bought this scanner for my husband, it was a christmas gift 2 yrs ago, paid over $200 for it and it has sat around all this time collecting dust, We could never figure it out, it has been a huge disappointment!

ok wen i connect the cable the scanner goes into "clone mood" an say to press 1 and when i do the scanner says no response and tells me to unplug the cable. so now what?

Yes, the same software, & cable, that works for the Pro-163 (and the PSR-300/400 series) would work for your Pro-97. Win-97, PSREdit-300, or ARC300.
