Scanner programs

Ok my question: I have a Pro95, Pro96 and a Pro 2067 (can you tell i work at radiosahck and enjoy the 30% discount :wink: ) I have programmed radios manualy before but I dont really know what other programs are ou there to use. I would love it if anyone could tell me names of a bunch of good programs that will work wth WinXP that I can use to program the scanners and also to monitor them. i.e. monitoring the trunked systems and such. I enjoy listening to my scanners but I would like to do more than just "hear" it I want to "interact" with it on ym computer. A very odd sounding statement I know. If anyone can help PLEEEEAAASE do. For programming the scanners Don Starr's WIN programs are the best for their ease of use. WIN 95 for the PRO 95 is free of charge and WIN 96 is $30 well spent dollars. Check Don's site for software for the 2067. http://www.starrsoft.com/

Thanks for the link. I tried them both for my 2067 and for my Pro95 ans got error messages on both. Not sure if im just not doing it right or what but If anyone knows the correct way to set this up please met me know. Also looking for programs that will work with the 2052 as well. Thanks again

It's a little tough to diagnose a problem without having the error messages, so you might want to include that in any replies; however, in the case of the Win9x programs, 2 things;

a. the 2067 is the mobile version of the PRO92, so Win92 should be your ticket;
b. There are so many resources available to answer questions on the Win9x programs that it's hard to know where to start; the Radio Shack scanner forum on this board, the Yahoo groups for the individual scanners....but perhaps if no one can help you here, contact Don Starr directly. He's been known to frequent this board, along with the Strong Signals website and no doubt many more. He's known to be very easy to reach with getting questions resolved.

Re the PRO2052; there hasn't been a lot of XP-directed development for this scanner, however Scan Control does support this scanner, and runs under XP. In addition, they have their own Yahoo group where you can get support from the owner/developer as well as the many folks on that list. You can find them under

Are you trying to connect to your scanners via a USB cable? That information would also be helpful to other folks here who might help. Take note that Scan Control also sells (thru a 3d party retailer) USB cable kits for their software.

Sorry about. that. I'll check out thoses sites. My prblem is that when clicking on "read data from scanner" on both models i get a "timed out" message. I read that you may need to downlaod some extra DLL's from the site but they have not worked. im using my red radioshack cable (not USB). Also how about monitoring software othen then Scan Control for the 4 scanners i had, what are my choices ifanyone knows? Scanners are again: Pro95 pro 96 2052 and 2067.

Don't know about a "red" cable, it does sound like your problem is the wrong cable. You need the grey (some call it a white or off-white) cable from radio Shack. The p/n is 20-289, $24.99. Here is a link:

Another problem might be that you have a program that is grabbing hold of the serial port, preventing the scanner program from communicating with the serial port. Many PDA programs (like HotSync) will do this. So you need to make sure you have the correct cable, then go from there. Don Starr is VERY good about working with people who are having problems with his programs, and reads the Yahoo groups devoted to those scanners. Simply because I'm familiar with it, try the Yahoo group for the Pro-92 http://groups.yahoo.com/group/pro92/ You'll be able to get plenty of help if you continue to have problems with Win92. Once you get one program working, they all should fall in line.

Your best software for the Pro-95, 96, & 2067 are the WinXX series of programs. Don Starr writes the best programs available for the GRE-built Radio Shack Scanners. Win92 (for the 2067) and Win95 are free, there is a charge for the Win96 program.

For the Pro-2052, which is a Uniden-built radio, the only program I know of is ScanControl, the link to the website is in another message. I'm sure there are other programs out there, but I don't know offhand what they are.

Well, let's see here; Scancat and Spectrum Commander both address the 2052, and Commander addresses most of the PRO9x series....

You can look around for yourself over on the Strong Signals Software page, which lists a great many other packages - however, I think you're going to find that, insofar as the PRO9x series is concerned, Don Starr's apps are the champ. The URL for that page is:

I must stress, though, that the PRO9x series cannot be computer controlled; only up/downloads are permitted. This is a firmware, not software issue.

Now as for the PRO2052; why not ask other 2052 owners what they think about software? There's a Yahoo group for it at:

I have a 2052 and use ScanControl. I like it very much. For the price, it adds alot more functionailty to the radio not to mention it saves ALOT of time programming with the keyboard as opposed to the keypad of the scanner.

There is a few freebie apps out there for the 2052 as well, so depending on just how much control you want of the scanner is up to you. The only thing I found that I liked in the free apps is the preset search lists, ScanControl does not have these.

Also, the Police Call books that they sell at the very store you work comes with a CD that includes software for scanners sold at RS. If your store has a 2003 edition (green book) laying around, grab it, because the older version of the software included in that edition was created specifically for the 2052. This software I should note does not do anything fancy, but it will upload a ton of frequencies in a matter of seconds.

ScanControl also controls quite a few different radios, so you may wish to see if it will work with more than just the 2052. Maybe it will work with them all, but I can't say for sure. Good Luck!

ScanControl supports the Uniden BC245XLT, BC895XLT, BCT8, BC780XLT, BC250D, BC296D, BC785D and BC796D Digital Ready scanners and the Radio Shack PRO2052, which as previously mentioned is a Uniden radio.

Also, in your other feed, someone pointed out that the GRE scanners can not be remotely monitored with software on your PC. However a free PRO96.COM program will collect data on the 96 on 9600 Baud CC.

The PC at your store, you should have ScanCat for programming some GRE scanners.

OK, I have downloaded most all of them. Thanks for all the responses. RE your response fmon I do have the PRO96.COM but I don't know if it works well b/c to my knowledge there are no 9600baud CC close to me . Also I do have the Police Call books and CD's. I used that when I first set up the 2052. And finally RE the ScanCat software at our stores. I hate using it. It's so limited b/c you can't change anything to personalize what you load.

So far I would have to say ScanControl. It lets you program, control, and track.
