I am particularly looking for retailers that sell scanners and accessories in London or Kitchener. I can't get to Toronto or Whitby unfortunately.

Okay thanks all, guess I'll do the online shopping thing. What I wonder is how big those discone antennas are since I was thinking of putting one outside of my ground floor apartment, and I don't want it to be too obtrusive.

Not sure what you mean by "'how big those discone antennas are". If you are going to order one, they come in a flat package about 3-4 feet in length. Once you receive it, you assemble it. My discone (in the attic) is about 5 feet tall and 3 feet wide. Hope this helps...

Thanks, that is what I meant by how big the antennas are. It doesn't sound too terribly large for my purposes. There is a guy on the same floor as me that has a satellite dish antenna on a five foot wooden pole, and I was thinking of doing the same thing with the discone antenna. That would hopefully give me better reception.

What are you primarily looking to listen to? A Discone antenna is *fantastic* for wide-band coverage, but if you really only need a single band, you might be better off with a mono-band antenna. They'll give you much better performance on the band they're designed for. A Discone is designed to be wide-band, not efficient/have gain. For 800MHz, in the space taken up by a Discone, you could put up a 6db vertical thatd knock the pants off of the Discone, in terms of performance.

They aren't big and ugly either ;)

I usually listen to a broad range of stuff, police, aircraft and railroad, so probably a discone would suit me best.
