Hi. I recommend Uniden scanners. You can buy a handheld portable like the 396xt and base 996xt and it will handle all your scanning needs. You can also pick up a HP 1 Home Patrol scanner, the newest scanner from Uniden that you can very quickly load this sites database into the scanner and you are ready to go.

There are a few local options to buy here, TorontoKris will always get a plug from me, he has scanners and sells them at a fair rate and will probably spend the time with you to help you if you come across any problems.
You can also buy from the states, I like and recommend Scannermaster if you go that route.
There are people who love GRE scanners and the Pro series from RadioShack so have an open mind when purchasing.

I currently own a Home Patrol scanner and used to have a 396T Uniden, have borrowed the 996xt (which I loved) and used a GRE portable scanner (which was ok, not my style).

Make sure you have $ to dedicate for a good antenna, the one that comes with Uniden product isnt all that great.

Radio shack has the pro 106 for 299.99 this weekend and scannermaster has psr500 for 369.99 . The 500 is the better deal as it comes with programming cable and ac adapter. With the xchange almost at par you can't beat that with a stick. Just make sure to tell scannermaster to ship USPS to avoid any border fees.

I can't say enough good things about my Pro-106. I use it in my work truck every day.

$299 for the 106, plus download cable ($30) plus AC adaptor ($15, if you need one) is still a better deal than the PSR-500, but to each their own.

Hi.

Ive had a HomePatrol since the beginning of October and I love it. I scan everything with mine. Its expensive though. But I recommend it for its ease of use and it has some great features too. Id also like other local HP-1 users to add me to MSN/Windows Live Messenger.
