I just purchased as PRO-164 and was hoping to be able to trunk track in the Central Denver area. However... Denver Public Safety AND Lakewood both use EDACS w/ ESK. The ESK part completely screws up everything so I can still listen but I am not able to track any conversations, which is the whole reason I bought a trunking scanner in the first place (and the PRO-164 is a huge pain to program). I am looking for the most affordable scanner (preferably handheld, but base or mobile will work) that can decode ESK and maybe comes with a manual that actually EXPLAINS how to program it. The cheapest I have found is the GRE PSR-500 and that runs $450!! I guess you have to pay for new technology though. Any suggestions would be of great help. Thanx!!!

Unfortunately the only other ones are the Uniden BC396 and 996 with the new firmware - and they're just as pricey. You might find something used for somewhat less. I would go to the Colorado forum and see what folks are using in the Denver area. Then start saving your nickels and dimes :.>> 73 Mike

ESK is not encryption. Several PC based decoding utilities understand ESK. The scanner manufacturers are slowly catching up.

Yes, ESK can be decoded. However voices like ProVoice and OpenSky can't. Therein lies the problem.
