Its the age old argument, using a scanner for personal gain or sharing what you hear for personal gain. Rushing to a call to get the scoop or best shot from what you have herd on a scanner. Well i look at it like this...i will be the first admit i go to fires and sometimes accidents i hear on my scanner but...i alway remain well back and let the officials do their job and cause no interference whats everer. If a media person is doing the same, staying back but giving the public info rmation that they have a right to know in a free country like Canada, it they're right.

I don't know why so many people on this board have such bad grammar.. I can't understand what half the people are saying.

Hemi..I'm glad that even if you go to an event you stay back, but...there are far too many gaukers at news events. I guess that's why media is there..because it's stuff that people want to see on the news; accidents and fires are interesting to the public. I was at a fatal in Vaughan a few weeks ago - there must have been 350 people just watching. I wonder what they did when they removed the body from the car.

The arguement of "use for personal gain" has gone on for as long as I can remember. But I'll tell you this much... Tow operators and media photogs have been doing this for as long as Police have used radios. Listen in any metro-area and you'll hear officers saying things like "If there's any tows in the area..." so they know everyone has ears. If Industry Canada wanted to raise a stink about this, it would have happened years ago.

There's absolutely nothing wrong with going to a scene and gawk, it always happens. Where the problem lies is that a good number of people don't know where that "invisible line" is to tell them where not to cross. If there's a large fire and you keep your distance, you aren't going to get in anybody's way and nobody is going to care. Just don't try and sneak your way into the scene. That said, those of us who do this stuff all the time know how to get into a scene and not get *****ed at - there's always a way to get your shot without being seen.

Speaking of which... I was shooting a barn fire in Bradford a few days ago. They had fire departments from 4 towns there. They were the nicest guys. They were all volunteer firefighters, laughing, eating pizza. Making fun of the chief.. I actually had a lot of fun at that fire, and they didn't care how close I went. One said to me, "Come with me, I'll show you where the best of the flames are"

continuing this until it gets locked...

It's called developing a relationship, and some of us, *cough* benefit from years of cultivating that relationship, and hence get unparalleled access.

As for scanners going to a scene...I don't understand it. I don't care how far away you are. The more traffic there is anywhere near ANY scene makes the life of first responders more difficult. And for those who think they aren't being seen...think again.

Cheers,

ES
