Same old song and dance. Everybody sings the "interoperability! We must have interoperable communications!" song, but watch their feet. Their feet are dancing the "We must encrypt everything and keep all our communications secure so the unwashed masses that pay for all of this including our paychecks can not monitor our daily activities on the job! dance.

It's all so tiresome.

And certainly I don't believe that fire department communications, at least relating to an actual fire scene, should EVER be encrypted.
I've also heard many firefighter's in-SCBA transmissions, and it's appalling how very nearly or completely unintelligible they area. What, nobody ever came up with an in-mask microphone that doesn't completely suck?
A better mask microphone.... THAT sounds like something a ham could work on perfecting.

Thanks
Joel

All humor set aside for the moment, yes, it's something that is in dire need of attention. How wrong is it that the guy who's in the most critical, life-threatening situation has the worst mic audio you ever heard? While he's in a burning building.

Yeah, THAT needs attention. If it's that bad, try a different vendor's solution. Keep at it until the audio is consistently intelligible.

Not to take this further off topic, but I heard EXACTLY that the other week. A real live FF mayday and it was appalling listening to command asking the folks inside to keep repeating themselves through the SCBA's. All the way to the point where they friggin sent someone else in to have a "face to face"....inside the damned burning building...All of this happening on the main dispatch channel and you could sense they dared not switch to the on scene channel in the middle of this. "watching" the forums here for some time now, I wonder about the bureaucracy versus the boots on the ground because it sure seemed to completely fall apart. The only thing that really worked was the basics of IC, but all the comms protocols went in the toilet- fast.

I wasn't being numerous (if that's what you meant), sometimes it's the people in contact with the problem that can solve it better than any manufacturer...

Really think and consider the ideas that this article references. (at least parts of the blog, the reference isn't available anymore)

Thanks

To many of us, there is intrinsic humor in the idea, "Let the hams fix it!" and that is what I was obliquely referring to.

The self-proclaimed "gods of radio" often are technically non-competent in the extreme. While others claim to know more than they do,
and a few are truly worth listening to and know their stuff.

Incidentally I'm extra class, myself. ;)

Haha, I can't count how many times I've been censored for topics off topic, dozens maybe.

PSX_20230620_150317.jpg

For all the nefarious comments secondary to unfamiliarity with the system that he's on as a reserve sworn auxiliary police officer for his town and a fire police officer for his fire company, and by the way we're talking about the original poster so, this is actually on topic, I hope that's okay.

We are both 69 years old and have a very similar background of monitoring on tunable monitors, Joey left monitoring to become a famous movie actor and TV actor, maybe you recognized him from The Sopranos as John Stefano or in Washington story with Tom Hanks and Denzel Washington, he's been on many famous television shows like homicide. Don't mean to go off topic but both super moderators have so... let's bring it full circle back to the poster and on topic.

We completey discussed his situation and he's going to buy another battery for his
radio, He has full access to all encrypted police in our County and is trusted with such, you don't think that Reserve police officers and fire police officers in our County are fully sworn and veted? Really?

He understands the situation now, so continue on with your off topic BS and leave the original poster alone.

He's a great guy and that's why he sits where he does. Here's a photo of us together today.

Difference is, mine was funny.

Encryption is a real thing that many don't understand. Since we don't know the OP, we are often on the right path to assume they don't know either. There's no shortage of volunteer fire fighters that think a Baofeng is a perfectly acceptable radio for fire fighting use. A lot of hobbyists and those inexperienced in radio assume that there's a magic button press on a scanner that will make it work, or just asking the right person and slipping him a five spot will get keys. As we know, it doesn't work that way.

Glad you can vouch for him and he got what he needed, that's what counts.

Radio wise, he really is from the past and had a long time away from the transition for 20 years that we had, that you know. Thereby, the genuine innocence in his inquiry.

By the way the many times I've been censored or had post deleted because of my comments or opinion, it was always .. meant to be funny, but we're getting off topic here but I appreciate your comments. I wouldn't have stepped up if I didn't think the op was the real deal and knew him well. A lot of people in the county do.

Some people just don't get humor.

Sounds like he's earned a lot of respect, that's good in my book.

I don't know.

The off topic stuff, especially about SCBA communications problems, was pretty informative and might get someone that's solved the (off topic) problem, to speak up, which could help a lot of people.

My personel input to the SCBA communications is that, in the military, we had (a few of us) "annunciators" that could be attached to gas masks, they were jusd about perfect, anything said with it when wearing the mask sounded clear as day on the outside of the mask. Just a mic, small amp, and, speaker.

Also, I've never heard of anyone being "censored" for just being off topic, it just seems that they are asked to stay on topic, or start another thread in the appropriate location, or blocked for other things like being obnoxious (being obnoxious, or going to a 'bad' place, or engaging with a mentally disturbed person , isn't the same as being off topic, not saying you, but I've seen it).

The mods actually seem very careful to not allow disturbed persons to be engaged in negative ways.... Like the guy that wanted to know the frequencies of the people that were following him.

Back completely on topic... Whatever your buddy is comfortable with, as a "gentle eccentric", I've asked for a lot more than an old radio in the past, but everyone considers it part of my personality, the most they can say is No.... or in some cases, the hesitation in their response to my request is enough for me to realize they're uncomfortable.

Thanks
Joel

I'm basically going way way back, the moderation has changed significantly since years going way back.

Things have changed for the better.

It was good to discuss encryption in person with Joey and suggesting that he gets a second battery so that he doesn't have to be concerned with the radio going dead when he needs it the most, that was one of the reasons he was thinking about a second radio.

It's not possible because the county does want control as far as keeping track of location, the availability of an emergency button and possible need to disable the radio if it's lost or stolen.

For me the case is closed and he was able to get some good advice here and in person. I just wanted to clarify my opinion of his motives being on the up and up.

Keep in mind that many agencies don’t even know what their key is. It was auto-generated in the KVL so it’s not written down anywhere. So if you get a device that can’t be loaded with a KVL (such as a Unication) you may be out of luck.
