SDS100/SDS200: SDS 100 and 200 not muting Encryption

Is anybody else having issues with both the SDS 100 and 200 not muting encryption? My state is still using conventional systems and some police departments use encryption on a part time basis. Before the past two software updates, both scanners would just say ENCRY and move on in between encrypted and clear transmissions. Now, I’m hearing the garbled hash in between encrypted and clear transmissions.

I have noticed that both my SDS100 and BCD436HP have some trouble muting encrypted talkgroups on P25 Phase II, and DMR Tier 3 systems. Good to see that Uniden is finally trying to do something about this.

encryption detection is being fine tuned by engineering. The new version should be in beta test shortly.

Would you please elaborate on the end goal for that? Is it total silence or will the radio still make a slight bit of noise? I prefer the latter.

The only encryption issues I've come across on P25 is when ADP (ARC4) is used. It will detect it's encrypted, but it will choppily play the encrypted garbage.

My SDS 200 displays the TG info with no audio on the last update. Before I never even saw the TG data like it never even happened

Digital decode or RF reception might have been improved but the squelch are still the same. Try setting the channels to FM instead of NFM or auto and also try one step lower on the squelch setting.

@Ubbe - How do you know the squelch function remains the same? I thought you had a SDS100E model? For some reason I thought that everyone outside the US was still waiting on updates.

I meant that the squelch functions the same, it detects noise in the signal to control the squelch action, and that doesn't change even if digital decode have been improved or that the squelch settings index have changed.

The SDS scanner often stops on a channel but doesn't unmute, so it can still decode the datasignal without any audio being heard. If you change to FM you get less noise and the squelch might unmute more easily.

I run just the new subprocessor DSP file in the SDS100E and noticed that the filter might have been done more narrow, increasing the modulation noise even more making it harder for the squelch to operate properly.

If you want it to make a noise, and you are using a programmed scan list and not the full database, how about adding an alert tone from the menu drop downs for that talkgroup? It would achieve what you want by letting you know it had stopped briefly on that talkgroup.

That would only work for known tg,s that carry encryption. Personally I like it to make a bleep or blip when it lands on a new/unknown tg that has not been discovered or submitted to the database which of course would not be programmed into a list. Without any audible sound, the only way to know a new tg is present and enc would be to stare at the display all day. While I myself run dongles on trunked systems 24/7 to learn of new tg's, an audible sound would alert others of new tg's that are not in the sdr world.

That would be a great addition, if (Whistlers?) patent rights allows it, to add more options for the ID Search function. @JoeBearcat

You can turn off all Known Departments/TG's and leave the scanner in ID search to only hear and record new/unknown TG's.

Right, but unless the scanner will make an audible sound on an enc tg, that's new, and not in a fav list, one would never know there were new enc tg's unless they were staring at the display. Many could care less about enc tg's but there are many of who do.

I want encryption mute to be an option...maybe it already is lol
Odd as my SDS200 mutes encryption and sometimes non_encrypted traffic using the latest firmware. Seems in detecting encryption it sometimes gets confused.

Sometimes for traffic analysis purposes I want to hear the encrypted audio (male voices, female voices etc). It's not a big deal but I haven't played with it enough to find out if crypto mute is a switchable option.
