I was looking at the database imported systems that my SDS100 provides and I saw that the scanner pulled in a DMR system. No, I haven’t purchased the DMR add-on, but it was allowing me to scan the DMR system! I was wondering if the scanner is actually scanning the DMR system, or is it just there looking like you can scan it but it’s not actually scanning? I’m not familiar with DMR, but does it show signal bars while scanning a system, like P25 systems? I appreciate any replys!

It will let you scan it but it won't decode the audio without the upgrade. You will just hear the DMR data stream if it stops on any DMR frequency.

For me downloading a DMR system from R/R doesn’t work as far as audio, but using that information and loading it by hand it does work, now that’s on my SDS. If I down then load that same information on to my TRX scanner it works just fine as downloaded! Good luck

Thing with the SDS as well as the 436HP (after firmware update) is that it's not really an update it's a microtransaction. The radio already has the DMR and NXDN capability out of the box, you're just paying them to allow you to use what you already own to it's full potential. Another scam just like when Intel tried the same thing with computer cores, thankfully that customer-base is a lot smarter and less delusional so it didn't last long. Oh well...

It is said that Uniden needs to pay a license fee for each trunking capable DMR and NXDN scanner, as well as any P25 capable scanner. So they use their key system to know how many that have enable that feature and Uniden pays a fee to the systems organisations based on that number of scanners. For their new scanners coming out that do not have P25 or trunking DMR/NXDN, only conventional, they supposedly do not need to pay any fees and can keep the retail price down.

There are many companies, like car manufactures, that develop software that includes all features but block them behind a key system so only those who wants the feature pays for the extra time and resources needed to develop them.

As Ubbe correctly points out You don't already "own" the DMR/NXDN decoding capability nor is Uniden running a "scam". Besides licensing fees Uniden also has to recoup R&D costs.
Don't lie about what you don't understand.

Many network gear does this today. For example, a router may have the capability to route at 40Gbps, however, out of the box, it only does 100Mbps. You buy a license to unlock more features. In the end, it saves the manufacturer cost, as they can produce fewer models. It also saves the customer some headache in 1) finding the correct model, and 2) someday having to replace that model with a faster unit.

Note. The SDS100/200 may not always hear activity on DMR unless it's the only channel you're monitoring. I've found that it needs ~30ms to lock on and each DMR Frame is ~30ms... There have been others who say the same thing too!
