Purchase SDS 100, last week, using the power cord provided by Uniden, I plug it into an outlet before bed approx 6-8 hrs later red light still on, not fully charged. Anyone else experience this?

Are you charging the battery with the scanner turned on? If so try charging it with the scanner turned off and see if the LED turns green...

The battery management circuit inside the battery doesn't allow more than a 500mA charge and the scanner at full volume doesn't take more than 850mA, so a charger that allows a full charge while listening to its audio with the volume at max has to provide 1350mA. It will be less if lowering the volume or while scanning and dimming the display.

The big battery is a 5,4AH one so it takes 11 hours to charge if it is completely empty. You can add a battery voltage display field to your scanner to keep track of the voltage when it is powered on. It will stop charging at a 4.25V battery voltage or something close to it.

Charging stops at a specific voltage and also if the temperature sensor in the battery indicates a too high temperature, like if the battery is fully charged and all charge current converts to heat if it continues to charge. If you charge from 90% to 100% and do that 10 times it will be equal to one full charge cycle. It is the same BMS circuit in the battery that are used when charging internally or externally.

Is this really fact or just myth? If true, shame on Uniden for designing it that way.

Because charging the battery, in the scanner, will wear out the battery.

That's the first I've heard of it. I have been charging the batteries in my BCD 436, SDS 100 for a few years and daily in the 150 without any noticeable issues. Yes, as with any rechargeable battery, you'll eventually reach the battery's life cycle and it will start charging less fully each charge, but that is based on charge cycles, not whether the battery is charged in or out of the scanner.

First, The OP was asking about the SDS100, not the BCD436HP.

Second, The SDS100 batteries have a not-so-good history with overheating.

Third, While the batteries for the BCD436HP are shaped like an alkaline-AA battery. As a matter of consistency. I don't charge either type of battery in the respective scanner. I also keep an extra set.

The SDS150 does charge in the cradle, I will give Uniden that much.

Yeah I think I gotta ask the poster who says "charging the batter in the scanner will wear out the battery" to cite his source.

Knocking on all the wood I can find, my SDS100 is plugged in 24/7 and I haven't had any issues. Battery life could be longer, but still works okay.

Because the power n' the recharge would be happening at the same time.

I am aware that the OP was asking about the SDS 100. My point was to @blueline_308 that I haven't had any issues with Uniden radios as a whole, including the 100. Yes, the 100 has had issues with batteries expanding but again, that isn't dependent on the batteries being charged in or out of the radio.

I agree with @ofd8001 please site your source that says that charging batteries in the SDS 100 scanner will wear out the battery.

How does this wear out the battery?
It doesn't...
Charging the battery in the scanner while running or not does not hurt the battery...
With the scanner running or not... What is not ideal is leaving the charging circuit active once the battery is fully charged...

LION battery's Do Not trickle charge... Once charging is complete charging is stopped...
But, inherent self discharging of the battery's can cause the charging to kick on and off periodically...
That is what is not good for battery life span...

I too got the page not found message. Wondering if a firmware update may have made the issue moot?

I agree that, or at least what I see, is that when plugging in a power cord, you get juice to operate the scanner or charge the battery, but not both at the same time.

@BigMike02 To answer your question directly, I have not seen the issue you described on my SDS 100. Just checking in since I haven't seen a response from you since your initial post and the thread is starting to stray off topic.

Has the light on your SDS 100 ever turned green? 6 to 8 hours should be long enough to charge the battery and turn the light green. You said you went to bed while it charged so am I correct in assuming the scanner was turned off while charging? I don't believe that there is an issue with charging the battery while the scanner is on and haven't found any information to suggest that there would be an issue, but I'm not sure if the light turns green while it is on and plugged in.
