Likely a scanner would be the better choice as it is more flexible. Note that if you got a G5 with VHF, you could cover most un-encrypted Coast Guard, but not Blue Angels.

Don't forget the G5 UHF will also receive Wal-mart, GAP, and chambermaids at local hotels. It is no substitute for a scanner.
