Welcome.
I see where it says 'newbie', so I hope you don't mind if we go easy on you.

If you're willing to help us by answering a few questions we'll do our best to get you squared away.

First of all, what kind of antenna do you have?
Is it indoor or outdoor?

Secondly, how many weather stations can you receive when you do a weather scan.?
The reason I ask is that many times this can indicate how well you are receiving at your location.

Speaking of location, would you describe it as 'way down in a gully' or 'high on top of a hill'?

That's it for now... More to follow.

It could be due to many things. First most counties in a state police post area have transmitters, all of which are linked together within that post area.

So the first question is, are you within "about" 30 miles of a transmitter associated with Morehead post? (If you gave the county in which your scanner is located, it would be easier to offer ideas.)

Secondly, maybe Hazard post is more talkative that Morehead.

I'm in Jefferson County and can hear Frankfort post fairly well from the Shepherdsville are transmitter, which is the same place one of the E-town post transmitters area located. Frankfort has little traffic, where E-town can be more talkative. (About the only time I heard a large amount of traffic from Frankfort is when the trooper was shot and they were dealing with that.)

You need to study the RR database as to what is available around you, then pull in the frequencies from the database into a favorites list. Not a lot listed for Wolfe County, but under the state police you want this freq listed below for Wolfe Co state police repeater. Get your local stuff setup first, then read and learn how to do the zip scanning. PM me if you need help.

The database lists 2 freqs for KSP Post 8 in wolfe county:
460.3875
460.1125

Scan them both and let us know what you pick up.
It says they use P25 so you shouldn't need any upgrades to receive these.
Program each frequency as a "P25 one frequency" system.

If you would like someone to step you through it the first time let me know.

My two cents is programming KSP as a one frequency trunk doesn't give any improvement. The only thing is with 536 models you'd get Unit ID information at a cost of missing the first little bit of traffic. (It takes a few microseconds to "get things going" as a trunked system decode). My SDS will get that information programming KSP as a conventional system with the appropriate NAC values programmed in the P25 NAC field and audio type of Digital.

The 460.3875 frequency is the "B" Channel, which is the primary dispatch frequency for Morehead. 460.1125 is the "A" Channel, which is the secondary channel. "A" channels are used if something major is happening and they want to get unrelated traffic off the "B" channel (something the call "10-3 is in effect on B".

Every now and then, transmitters break and are off the air. So you may want to program Powell, Menifee and Morgan county towers, just in case or perhaps as a trial.

Good info to know.
