I recently purchased a SDS200 and love it.

I've been using it with the extendable antenna that was in the box and it works good.

What difference will I see going to a Diamond Super Discone Antenna?

I plan on mounting it on a fiberglass pole I have my weather station mounted on the very top.View attachment 78286View attachment 78286

I'm sure this is a stupid question but all of this is new to me.

Thanks for your time Mike.

Well, you can't go wrong with a Diamond discone, and putting it on a pole outside is a great idea. Your reception will improve significantly better than any rubber duck. I use a Diamond discone and get great reception, some systems almost 100 mi away. You have the right idea!

A discone is a good scanner antenna because it has a good response over a wide frequency range. Getting it up high will help reception tremendously. Just make sure you use good coax like LMR-400.

Does your fiberglass pole have guy lines for stability? I can’t tell from the pics you posted. If not, you’ll want ‘em! A discone is not exactly a small antenna, and it has some weight to it. Personally I would only mount one on a metal mast, and would research proper grounding and lightning protection. But for sure an outdoor discone is going to broaden your horizons in terms of what you‘re able to receive.
