I live in a town where the police and fire use NXDN Ran 1 for their dispatch frequencies and most of the time the police are in the encrypted mode. Now when in encrypted mode I can hear the encryption so I know when they are talking. but the fire department dispatches the calls in the clear and has them switch to channel 2 to respond which I never hear either direct or repeater or encrypted comms . I am in city limits and pretty high and I use a rooftop Diamond D-130 antenna and can usually hear anyone talking within five miles direct. Now my question is if I leave the audio mode on (ALL) and they are on one of the other channels should it also find the RAN number if they are using a different one other then RAN 1 while scanning those frequencies? Or should I do a frequency search to find the alternate RAN if they are using one? Or do I have to change the RAN numbers one by one to find them? Any help would be appreciated.

I would duplicate the channel. Once for Analog audio type and do a CTCSS/DCS search. The second version, I'd set it for Digital and do a Digital Code Search.

That way you are searching for most everything. They could still be using an analog version of the frequency. They could also be using a whole 'nother frequency too and you might need to do some detective work.

All mode will receive both analog and digital mode automatically. But you cannot use scan, you have to use search ranges for the frequencies as Uniden scanners mutes and skips any encrypted channels in scan mode.

Regarding the FD switching to another frequency after they sign on to the dispatch channel; (assuming the FD is NOT using encryption), a simplex frequency at higher MHz (700-900) are pretty much line-of-sight. The apparatus may also have lower power settings for these fire ground frequencies… the portable radios certainly do. So, it’s not unheard of to not be able to hear the activity, even when it’s just a couple of blocks away. Assuming you have the correct programming for the simplex fire ground work, the next time you hear a dispatch within walking distance, grab the portable scanner and get closer to the scene. That will tell you a lot… if you hear nothing, try Close Call… maybe they are using equipment left over from before they moved to the newer system.
