Hey Everyone,

This might be a stupid question... But, why don't the Police just keep ALL their transmissions SECURE / ENCRYPTED? It seems like you are always hearing them say, SWITCH TO N-SECURE. Why don't they just stay in SECURE all the time? There are also times when you can hear the unit calling into dispatch who's radio is in encryption. I guess it's possible for one unit to be in secure and one not and they can both talk to each other? I am sure that all of us would rather them stay unencrypted...but what is the real reason that they don't all just stay secure? Is it because all the radios out there aren't capable of it yet?

If they did, would you buy a scanner? After the 250 was released, the State started to use more encryption.

Yes. LEO's are supposed to use clear on dispatch but forget to turn off encryption.

Bingo! Homeland Security at your service. They are working on it. Whether it is used depends on ...

It's usually because it sounds like crap and has limited range if it's an analog form, (securenet or inversion).
As for P25 if all are equpped then there should be no reason not to unless someone doesn't have a secure equipped radio.

I was planning on programming the DSP into my 796D. Can anyone tell me what % of their transmissions are regularly encrypted. I just might be wasting my time. Thanks. :?:

Almost all transmissions on each DSP "Command" (essentially the main dispatch for each county), "Data" & "TAC" talkgroup are in the clear.....there are plenty of other talkgroups that are either less significant or are full-time encrypted. See the database for "D" (digital - almost always in the clear) or "E" (full-time encrypted) to learn of more TGs that you might choose from. Almost all local PD talkgroups are non-encypted, as well.

Unless things change in the future, you'll have plenty of worthwhile DSP radio traffic to tune into.
