Burlco having weather problems today and now. The 2nd tornado alert of the day just was called at 6:30p; prior was 3 hrs earlier. Three severe flooding alerts out at 1:35a, and 2 more in the last few hours. The cell phone's 'Emergency Alerts' pops off first, and a few minutes later the county comms puts out an 'All Call' page, cable overides the TV audio, and the county highway dept radio is going nuts. They have been blocking off flooding roads in the SE portion of the county. Storms moving NE; banging SW of Red Lion Airport N73 now. Tornado stuff unusual for the area.

With high humidity such is expected, writing after midnight I'll say yesterday was so saturated the outside of windows in air conditioned buildings were running like rain. By the time the violence in Burlington Co. got here it amounted to little, thank goodness.

What most people don't understand is there are two kinds of tornado alerts, a watch and a warning. Today's was a watch, Doppler radar indicated cloud rotation, nothing to worry about but keep your eyes open, watch. A warning is only issued when a tornado is spotted on the ground, confirmed, so take shelter. People just don't get it, when an "alert" is issued they're suddenly struck by Chicken Little Syndrome... SHEESH!

As expected this from AccuWeather, not a good day for swimming.

...HIGH RIP CURRENT RISK NOW IN EFFECT THROUGH WEDNESDAY EVENING...

* LOCATION...THE COASTLINES OF NEW JERSEY AND DELAWARE.

* RISK OF RIP CURRENTS...HIGH.

* SURF HEIGHT...3 TO 6 FEET.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...

A HIGH RISK OF RIP CURRENTS IMPLIES THAT WIND AND/OR WAVE CONDITIONS WILL SUPPORT THE DEVELOPMENT OF VERY STRONG RIPS CURRENTS. THESE RIP CURRENTS WILL BE LIFE THREATENING TO ANYONE WHO ENTERS THE SURF.

Living in literalville again. Yes, I know the difference between watches and warnings. Doesn't change the fact that cell (never had the phone app pop off so frequently in a short period of time), pager and radios were going crazy. The county highway personnel were on duty all night into this morning. Moving sandbags and road closure signs around, some workers surprised at what creeks were found overflowing. Not reported, I heard 'black rotating clouds' called out by an op on a heavy landing at MAFB about twilight time. I stand by my statement that tornado "stuff" around here is unusual, rare (take your pick). Last time I saw the results of a tornado near here was a twin F1 that went through WDC at Four Mile Circle; I wound up photographing the damage for work. I don't remember the year anymore, but it was the same summer that two weeks earlier all the dams in Medford were washed out in a few hours. My post wasn't intended to scare anyone, but to alert people to mucho activity. Living in literalville in Burlco... HTH. :)

Edit: There is a freight train of severe thunderstorms moving W->E over the central part of the county this (9-5) afternoon. I hope the last of the humid air dragged here by Issac finally pushes off shore soon. That should quiet the swells on the coast if the hurricane now around Bernuda gets pushed east.

No problem,Tech 792. Warren was being politically correct. I realize now I used the wrong term, but my old mind focused on the racket the 'Emergency Alerts' the phone app was making. In 1960 I started out studying meteorology in college, but calculus bit me. Still retain the interest, especially living in the pines. I've been monitoring the FFS since the first programmable scanners were marketed, and worked with FEMA at one time. I've seen stuff in MO and IN as well, once had lightning strike about 40 feet from me, wx makes me nervous at times. :)
